She says they are either Bovan Nera or Maran Cuivree, and we will know for sure when I get the first egg, cos the Maran lay dark chocolate coloured eggs But they were only £13 each. I like black, wanted Goth hens

I read somewhere that it costs about 5pence to produce an egg, so 20 eggs to the pound, when added up it doesn't make financial sense for quite some time to have a few chickens, but to have an egg so fresh is somthing you won't get from the supermarkets

ours ate more than they produced over the winter ( bad hens) and OH was threatening them with the chop (or the fox!) but there is something nice about collecting a warm egg, plus I am learning a lot about hen care so when the shtf I know what I am doingthe-gnole wrote:I read somewhere that it costs about 5pence to produce an egg, so 20 eggs to the pound, when added up it doesn't make financial sense for quite some time to have a few chickens, but to have an egg so fresh is somthing you won't get from the supermarkets
Next step would be breeding for meat but we're not there yet.....

It wasn't about money, I just always wanted them and it seemed the right time to go for it. I don't mind no eggs in winter - they're entitled to a rest

If was about the money I would be getting them from Morrisons, 30p for half a dozen free range eggsdiamond lil wrote:It wasn't about money, I just always wanted them and it seemed the right time to go for it. I don't mind no eggs in winter - they're entitled to a rest
It would take a long time to re-coup the £400-£500 we spent on getting the little darlins sorted

One was poorly but I think maybe just chilled, we thought we were going to lose her. She was like an inflated beachball with a head, and stood motionless with head and tail drooping, for 3-4 days. But she's fine now and they are getting bigger. Both feed from my hand . The whole caboodle was under £200 inc hens. But the cat ( who hasn't shown any interest at all in the hens themselves) likes to sleep on the netting over the run, and he's so fat we think he will bring it all down. So we are trying to think of a cunning plan to keep the wee sod offit !
