Norfolk Newbie

Post by maxpdaddy »

Hi All,

I'm Mark from Norfolk, and looking to learn some skills and supplies for survival gear.

I work in IT but also have other skills such as electrical / electronics, engine maintenance and mechanical knowledge, i also have a foundation HAM radio license. On the more personal side i also know a little first aid (trained 15 years ago with no refresh) and I'm a great cook :D

Since having kids I have found myself suffering from severe paranoia that something bad will happen to them or us, to the point that I'm seeking help to control my fears. Maybe I'm just being silly... or does anyone else have the feeling that the world is really on a slippery slope?

While I have thought of many scenarios that could happen right down to simple car or household accidents. My particular brand of fear is of the flashy flashy mushroom cloud variety, i find myself checking the news constantly to see if there are any hints of things going sour enough to justify these fears. I'd be interested to know if there are others who have as much fear or think about this as much as I do. So I know that I'm not just going crazy.

A common theme I've been reading is that partners and other family are not on board and this is certainly the case for me too. I find there is a lot of ignorance and people who bury their heads on these things and I feel a certain amount of responsibility to prepare for them also. My mother in law believes that in a WW3 scenario there will be one quick flash and it will all be over. My partner believes that she would know what to do in an emergency situation... but the evidence does not hold up!

So that's me and my reasons.. looking forward to chatting with you all !

Regards

Mark

Sorry to hear of your paranoia, hopefully these fears will recede as you start to feel more prepared. There are many potential problems in the future, and some people seem to think they are all equally likely, but perhaps it's more useful to look at what is actually happening, rather than some theoretically possible but unlikely event.

For example, there are millions of people who would love to move to the UK right now, how would you be if they were allowed to settle near you ? How would unemployment affect you ? Or another financial crisis ?

These scenarios are much more likely than nuclear war, so IMHO they are more worthy of preparing for, and the same preps actually yield a benefit right now.

You might feel comfortable if you build a nuclear bunker, but will you be able to use it day-to-day ? Maybe as a root store ? Or will it be a waste of time and money, better spent enjoying time with your kids ?
