The lumps are not too bad, I don't mean lumps like cottage cheese, that would be pretty grim, more like the ones you got back before milk was homogenised and you were the first one to open it.Decaff wrote:Im the same as your wife, I cannot stand the stuff, when in Portugal I couldn't have a tea or coffee for the whole two weeks, just the smell of that stuff turns my stomach.Jamesey1981 wrote:I've found that when it gets a while out of date it can sometimes go lumpy as the fat separates out if it's not the skimmed stuff, I've never had one that did me any harm or tasted off, but it is a bit unsightly, a good few hard shakes of the carton before opening it helps with that.
You get used to the slightly weird taste of it, my Mrs hates it and we only use it on the boat, but I spent a lot of time in France when I was a kid and fresh milk was almost impossible to get back then, so I got a bit of a taste for it!
Lumpy milk! Lumps, in milk?! Oh heck that's truly a retch reaction from me

That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die.
Re: Out of date UHT
My better half and I ONLY have UHT at home. We use it for everything , coffee, cornflakes, glass of milk, cooking etc.
I always heavily stock up on the stuff as our 'local' tescos is a fair distance away. We hardly ever go below 20 cartons in the house.
It's good to know that it keeps well past the use by date, and we only ever get skimmed, we may even avoid the lumpy milk issue. I may increase our stocks of it now. If the shtf, then my missus would be unbearable if she couldn't have a cup of tea, and I wouldn't fancy having to try milking a sheep.
