Strawberry netting for fishing? (SHTF)
Strawberry netting for fishing? (SHTF)
I saw strawberry netting for a £1 in Tesco today, it's pretty fine mesh and I wondered if it would work for survival fishing. Note I'm talking after a SHTF situation here, (I'm pretty sure it would be illegal under normal conditions) Just wondered if it would work and what other things it could be used for?

Do you mean the plastic mesh stuff?sniper 55 wrote:I saw strawberry netting for a £1 in Tesco today, it's pretty fine mesh and I wondered if it would work for survival fishing. It would probably work, but likely only once, it's not all that strong and a reasonable sized fish would wreck it, you also wouldn't be able to use it in much of a current as I can't imagine you could get much weight on it without it breaking.
If you have a look on YouTube though there's a fair few videos on how to tie fishing nets, as well as making the net needle and gauge if you don't fancy buying them, they are cheap to buy, but I like to make stuff when I can. Only need to know a couple of knots and have some decent cord and you can make nets that'll last for ages.
Forget what I said if I've misunderstood the product that you are referring to, if it's made of actual cord rather than that green kind of extruded plastic stuff then it'll be a lot stronger.
That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die.

Iit was a plastic mesh stuff, I didn't buy one to see how strong it was but it's pretty thin stuff so your probably right.

You could probably use it to make a prawning net or even a trap come to think of it, they're pretty small so it would probably need a few layers to stop them falling out or escaping though.
For a real full on get what food you can or die situation I would imagine that if you strung it up in the right place it would catch and tangle small birds or maybe even bats, but I won't be trying that until I run out of options!

it's totally illegal under current rules, classed as gill netting - the Environment Agency wouldn't be happy if they caught you using it and they'd fine you £££'s probably even go to court.
Its a poachers method, that's if you get caught, in 30 years of coarse fishing ive only ever seen an EA bailiff 3 times, most recent one was 4 years ago and he was investigating illegal crayfish traps (yes they're a pest as non indigenous and all that but you still need a ticket which costs to deploy the traps).
if its SHTF time then I'd say crack on...

It does say SHTF in the thread title.dazthechippy wrote:it's totally illegal under current rules, classed as gill netting - the Environment Agency wouldn't be happy if they caught you using it and they'd fine you £££'s probably even go to court.

Gill netting (also seine netting and drift netting) also isn't illegal as long as it's in the sea, you don't use a powered boat to set them if you're planning on selling the fish, and as long as you don't interfere with a trout or salmon run, it does ultimately depend on local bylaws though.
Discussion on the legality of various methods here : http://www.sacn.org.uk/Articles/Is_It_Legal.html
If you're in the Environment agency's jurisdiction though as far as I can tell it would be illegal, as they deal with fresh water and migratory fish like salmon and trout, (no netting for those) and I think (although I could be wrong) that you can't set nets in rivers and I can't imagine the owners of any lakes would let you set them either.
You can guarantee that using this particular netting even in the sea would be illegal though, the bylaws will likely specify a legal mesh size, and this stuff would probably be too small even if it was strong enough.

Just to make it clear I am talking SHTF time (as I said in my OP), I'm not suggesting for one minute it should be used as a normal means of fishing.

The bailiff will likely have already been eaten anyway, I doubt that a fish measuring stick would be much use to defend yourself from a zombie!sniper 55 wrote:Just to make it clear I am talking SHTF time (as I said in my OP), I'm not suggesting for one minute it should be used as a normal means of fishing.

I think you underestimate the powers of the water bailiffs, there's a reason that zombies stick to human flesh. You don't wanna feck with the........WATER BAILIIFFS.....sniper 55 wrote:Just to make it clear I am talking SHTF time (as I said in my OP), I'm not suggesting for one minute it should be used as a normal means of fishing.

That sounds like a great title for a movie.Deeps wrote:I think you underestimate the powers of the water bailiffs, there's a reason that zombies stick to human flesh.
