Reviewing my kit and realized that one area that's not been covered is safety helmets,
I have a bump cap & a hard hat but what if it all goes turbo and 9mm's etc are heading my way?
What's everyone's thoughts on the subject?

safety helmets
Re: safety helmets
Much like motorcycle helmets, I wouldn't trust a second hand one.
The latest ballistic helmets can suffer from stress fractures if dropped, and I know I wasn't that careful with mine.

Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.
Re: safety helmets
Crikey we are getting serious! Not even considered it to be honest we do shoot, but not at stuff which shoots back
and I have to say it's a step or two beyond what I have even considered perhaps an armoured car BOV is on the agenda if we win the lotto
I suppose ballistic helmet would be the first area to want to protect though, not high on our list.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.
Re: safety helmets
Something like this will do for me.
Re: safety helmets
Citizen H, I think if you wore that in a troubled time, you'd absolutely be drawing unwanted attention to yourself!
I think the same about the pom-pom on Deeps' pic too, mind you
Srsly, if there's a situation where you need that sort of helmet - you need to be out of there. And evacuating while wearing that, not a good idea. The most I'd wear while evacuating is a hat like Deeps's, I have a natty purple variety with built in elastic round the rim cos my head's so big
or possibly, just possibly, a bike helmet. I don't *own* one, mind, but I do plan to buy a bike, so I'd buy a bike helmet.
Or I'd carry my sister's sewing machine - it was a top of the range model in 1981, and she told me the body is made of Kevlar
no kidding!

Re: safety helmets
I've been wondering about this too as a bugging-in'er having to deal with communal issues. I've been considering a climbing or caving helmet rather than a motorbike helmet. Situation would be incoming melee weapons or thrown rocks/bottles.

Re: safety helmets
I've got a rescue helmet with visor in the car for dealing with accidents etc, which would offer some protection if ceilings were coming down or something like that. It wouldn't offer any ballistic protection though.
It's worth noting even a good ballistic helmet is only around level 3A, so it's useless against any rifle rounds and even some of the new smaller pistol rounds designed to defeat body armour. And they are around £400 last time I saw a price.
Theres also a ton of "fake" ones around made from fiberglass-ish stuff, they've even got into the military on at least one occasion that I know of, that didn't even stop a 9mm.

like you it was the uncertainty of what would be chucked at me that prompted the topic, I did have a army lid but back in 92 I moved and as I wasn't likely to use it again it was repurposed as a........ Hanging Basket......... (it wasn't my Idea) and no, it cant be reused, its long gone.
so here we are 2016 and Prepping... for what? I guess all eventualities, so yes Im giving head protection some serious thought,

Re: safety helmets
Hats hmmm
Well for high winds I've got a fleecy hat
For cycling guess it's a cycle hat
Horse riding crash skull
Site use hard hat.
As for 9mm it's more 13mm nuts and bolts I'm used to not 7.62 or 5.56.......
