just to mention that red light is less visable to the naked eye as it doesn't travel as far if you are trying to keep hidden

Camping - in the tent - if we're away for a couple of nights backpacking they're lighter to carry and divisable wheras a lantern isn't!
Though if we're travelling really light we'd just take a maglite solitaire (LED enhanced) each, as you can unscrew the lens cap and use it as in 'candle' mode.
We also clip the cyalumes/holders to our lads' rucksacks as a beacon when out on late night adventures.

We have some (thanks hobo :D ) and will use them for marking doors or stairs in the event of a power cut, also handy for having a low level light in the campervan at night. The plus points of them for me is they require no batteries, there is no danger of a spark and they are smallish and lightweight so you can always keep a few stashed in a bag for emergencies etc.

I got some white 12hr sticks a while back. They lasted a lot longer than 12hours!. 24 hours later there was still enough light to pee by and just about read with the stick right up against the paper.
