Chicken Problem

Well on Wed I got one small brown egg and one huge white one, together in the nest box. Then yesterday we were back to the big white egg lying smashed on the coop floor. Weird and annoying me.

if the egg was there wednesday why did you not collect it then?
are you trying to breed more chickens?

Luxor, I think Lil means that the situation has returned to its previous state ie only one egg a day and that one egg being smashed.

Lil, I don't know what to suggest, really. If they aren't eating the egg then they are just clumsy! Do you know what time it is laid, eg does the laying hen make a big song and dance and announce the egg's arrival with lots of cackling? Could you then immediately rescue the egg? Or could you somehow slope the nest box slightly so the egg rolls to one end and has less chance of being smashed?

I do watch her, and pop in and out to try and get the egg asap. When I find them broken it's in the main part of the coop. But when they are ok they're in the nestbox. Just weird. Unless she gets caught short or something before she makes it into the nestbox!

Lil, have you checked for rats? I sometimes get the buggers in our barn (where the hens now are) and they try to roll the eggs away, believe it or not! I put poison down the drainage holes in the flagstone floor, it usually keeps them away for three to four months.
