Regarding what 8 items I'd grab in a rush out the door, stumped on that one!! I pretty much carry an urban 'man bag' all the time now when out which carries some essentials for day-to-day. On top of this I have my EDC belt order and in the truck I have my overnight kit and search & rescue kit.... I suppose my list would be:

1. Car keys.
2. Sharps box (knives, pack axe, saws, etc).
3. USB stick of important docs.
4. Laptop and ancill's.
5. A bag of fresh food from cupboards, fridge.
6. Bigger, family tent.
7. Spare fuel jerry cans x 2.
8. spare water cans x 2.

Thats pretty much it off the top of my head..... everything else of importance for a few days away from home is either on me or in the truck. I have a cache 20 miles away at my mothers house so even if I was on foot, I have kit in place.

Good post, gets you thinking about what our lives can condense down into when moving out for good within minutes.

The same way you get things like an AS50, you join a club, be a upstanding member (for years) and do a lot of competitions. You then do a hell of a lot of paperwork, and other boring things. From start to end I'd guess it takes about 10 years before they don't just say no.

As long as you're a member of a target shooting club which shoots the caliber rifle/lbp you're after you shouldn't have a problem getting the calibers you want. It's highly unlikely you'd get a .50 cal on your first FAC application though, but shouldn't be a problem to get .22rf semi, .22rf bolt action, .308/7.62, bolt action, .44 or .357/38spl lever action, and a muzzle loading pistol on a first FAC application.

The problem is there is not much consistency across the country when it comes to FAC. Although there are guidelines, it's down to your local Firearms officer (who comes to see you when you apply) and the final say is the chief of police of your area...

The FAC application isn't too bad, probably the trickiest thing is finding 2 referees which fit their criteria!
