New Potatoes

Post by itsybitsy »

My new potatoes have zero flowers on them - how do I know if/when they will be ready to harvest. Also, some of the plants are pretty small. They were planted out back in March. Not had this issue before! A friend of mine has the same thing - new potato plants small and no flowers, main crop - like triffids!

Any thoughts?

Have a gentle scrape round in the soil, and see if any have formed.

I have had the same issue down south here. Aaran Pilots I think were my earlies. Some of them did get nobbled by frost but continued to grow. However most of them are stumpy. I have dug 3 plants and got some new potatoes from them but they are generally small apart from the odd good sized one and there are still a fair number of tiny pea size ones in their initial stage of growing. My main crops plants are huge and starting to flower. Not dug any of them yet. I recon both crops will be ready at the same time. The earlies were put in the ground in March after chitting and the main crop at the end of April. Very odd.
