Eating History

Post by grenfell »

Having a browse on the sky telly box i came across this programme on the sky history channel. I suppose it's the tv version of what gets done on youtube but interesting enough either way. Basically two guys who open and try old foodstuffs and from the few shows i've watched so far the majority aren't good. They also do a section where they cook up historical foods using fresh ingredients. One was a mouse nose jelly and another recipe from the depression era comprised breadcrumbs and peanut butter baked inside an onion for example. It probably ties in with the Harold McGee tread .

Sounds interesting.

Isn't there some bloke on YT who eats old field rations?

Yes i've looked at some on youtube. Every so often i'll look at http://www.mreinfo.com/forums/index.php? and there's usually a link to someone scoffing old rations but on a lot of them the rations are in view more than those doing the eating so i've never really taken note of their faces. Could easily be the same people for all i know. To be honest i'm in two minds about this really. On the one hand food is produced to be eaten but on the other it seems sort of wrong to open and eat or try to eat rations that should be in a museum especially when in all likelihood they'll be inedible.
