What Preps are you doing this week? Part 8.

Brian Rix! Yes, my memory does extend that far… sadly.

Ha! These days, he'd have been sacked long ago, but he was terrified of me I was *extremely* left wing, though he didn't realise there was a genuine revolutionary in the Education Department who wore makeup and silk dresses as a cover, it was a funny old place.

My computer skills are confined to my IPhone and iPad; user friendly for my browsing ,fishing videos on YouTube and buying fishing gear on eBay ! My Boss expects me to be a bloody accountant/ IT expert, on top of what he employed me for. Is that the same for other trades?

Same for me - I was a counsellor for nigh on 30 years, and my business partner thought I was some kind of genius with computers - I wrote our little website on Microsoft Front Page and uploaded it via the old fashioned FTP programmes. I was rubbish, but he didn't know that

Anybody else?

In terms of actual prepstering, I'm back at weeding the garden ... had to take *another* layoff after my back went because of low blood pressure.

It doesn’t matter what plans you make, what you store etc. Your health dictates everything. Mrs J has ( hopefully) had her last post cancer op, and it means she will be out of action now for two months minimum. The human body is marvellous, but it is also frail.

2008 was the year that the Military really went full out on computers, booking leave, getting DRs appts, administrative punishments, booking vehicles etc.

Glad to say my 22 was up half way through that year and this Luddite avoided the future

My oldest friend worked for Severn Trent Water. He maintained pumping stations,and each job he did was recorded on a simple paper form,each one submitted to the relevant office at the end of each day. Then they introduced computers. He was given a laptop ( which he had never used before), and a 15 minute drill on how to fill out online worksheets. He had no technical backup, and was disciplined within a month ( clean record for 30 years) for not doing his job properly. He had a nervous breakdown,and finally got pensioned off. He is still on medication,and shudders if you mention his old job.

Same. The recent rain has made my garden a jungle and I'm off this week so I really need to do something about it, but my back makes it difficult. I mowed the lawn last night (with a push-me-pull-you manual mower) with very bad grace and a lot of swearing. My back was bad all night after that. Today the lawn needs raking and then I need to weed like a demon. I suspect I'll have to finish that tomorrow.

My tomatoes are doing well which is making me very happy, especially since I think I have to write off the broccoli and other greens due to bugs.

I'm off out in a bit to get one of my rear indicator bulbs fixed at Halfords (I'll get the nice chap to show me how to do it while he's fitting it). To continue the topic of tech invading trades, the poor mumbling lad who called to confirm my fitting slot suddenly stopped his booking script and wailed 'I can't make the booking system work!'

Google your cars make model and change rear bulb there's often a video on YouTube


Might be worth visiting a decent motorfactors and get a selection of bulbs for your car ... Last time I went I got 30x bulbs for £10

Glad I went to Halfords - it was a bit more complicated than I thought it would be It was good to see how the chap did it close to.

After seeing the weather forecast for tomorrow (rain, rain, and a bit more rain) I felt I should just power through the garden stuff. I'm sat here with all my muscles complaining, but pleasantly surprised my back hasn't kicked me yet. I cut back the greens that the bugs had got and they basically crumbled in my hands. Utterly depressing. But I still have carrots and plantain and hopefully (fingers crossed) beetroot.

Tomorrow will be spent trying to sort this place out a bit as I have family descending on Saturday and they will *judge*. I need to hide a few of my preps better - easier said than done in a tiny house!

What car do you have ? Good few years ago I had someone rubbish that you could change a bulb in 2 minutes on my last car on a owners forum..... Not to be out done I did it in 2 minutes one handed as I was filming it to put on YouTube to prove it was possible



It's funny how friends / family try and judge... Had a family friend round last weekend who always tries to get a rise out of me... Last weekend it was the "bet you've got a bug out bag!". Didn't rise but did ask where she expected me to take 3 kids . The Moors or the local travel lodge five minutes later followed with

"got anything for insect bites? "

I got out the Lidl branding iron Aka the sanitas thermal bite pen. It does get uncomfortably hot but the heat destroys the protein in the bite stopping the itch a £10 equivalent to this

I'm used to welding / grinding burns so it doesn't raise a flinch off me....


I'm guessing by the total flip out she won't EVER ask me for first aid ever again


Incidentally it seems to work well on warts only given the couple I have a couple of goes I usually resort to a soldering iron

Hyundai i10. The entire light housing has to be unscrewed. I said to the bloke 'that looks really complicated' as he was trying to get the correct bulb out of the housing and he said 'sorry I'm just making it look hard!'

I've never heard of thermal pens! What a good idea. I'll keep an eye out as if I get bitten I swell up and itch like heck. Ended up at the walk in centre once with a bitten leg that swelled twice its size despite being on prescription antihistamines
