Fire
Just watching all that rioting and wondering how - or if - you can protect your home against fire? Does this make anybody think twice about bugging in ?
Re: Fire
Fire blankets and fire extinguishers are on my list, I have both for the campervan but none for the house. Also a rope / chain escape ladder. They have been on my "need to buy" list for ages but after viewing the tv recently I will make them a priority
Anybody who works for a larger company will probably have people who are trained to be "fire marshals", if you dont know the various types of extinguishers or how to use them correctly putting your name down could be an easy and free way of getting some basic training
As to second thoughts about bugging in, I dont live in an area like those on the tv but it has been a reminder of how difficult it would be to defend against a mob. Mind you, bugging in has always only been the preferred plan while it is safe to do so....it's deciding if or when to bug-out that is the problem.

have the one for the car but will start looking for those other items too.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.
Re: Fire
1. You are very, very unlikely to ever have a fire.
2. If you have a fire it will probably be caused by yourself not rioters.
3. Before buying extinguishers and escape ropes BUY A SMOKE DETECTOR or five.
4. Discuss a fire escape plan with every one, what to do and who does it. Get up, pickup slippers and dressing gown, get out, if you cant get out go into front room, open window, yell, wait. etc.
4. Have fire drills just like you do at work. Get people used to getting out with no warning. If you need to for real they will then follow by rote.
5. At three tomorrow morning when everyone is asleep sneak downstairs, turn off the electricity and start yelling FIRE. See what happens.

Re: Fire
Found a decent site for ladders, the prices start fairly reasonably depending on length and wall thicknesspseudonym wrote: have the one for the car but will start looking for those other items too.

Re: Fire
I know you throw salt or sand on a coal fire when the chimney goes up but that's all
Re: Fire
We have extinguishers in the kitchen ,stairs and landing. Also a blanket in the kitchen,4smoke alarms round the house,2big escape windows upstairs and a FIRE PLAN.This is the most important thingKNOWING what to do IF(as Ian says) a fire should break out.My main reason for a high level of preparedness in this area is because some years ago I had a nutcase living next door who liked to randomly start fires! Some sleepless nights at that time of my life I remember.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.
