I'm not saying it won't or doesn't happen, but I haven't seen reports of food riots or societal breakdown in Ukraine or Israel.

No I meant look at what happened in Iprin and Bucha. Those with guns and bigger weapons can pretty much do what they want. The law would become the law of the jungle. It happens in every war so it would happen after we were devastated.
Re: In the event of nuclear war...
Thanks. I'll read up on Irpin and Bucha.
I take it you mean military suppression and intimidation by an overpowering invader, rather than societal breakdown. You are right of course. The unarmed are helpless when the armed take control, whether that's invading army, or local warlords.

Bad men do bad things when they have guns and there’s no rule of law. It is as simple as that.jennyjj01 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 16, 2024 8:43 am Thanks. I'll read up on Irpin and Bucha.

Re: In the event of nuclear war...
We crossed too many Russian Red Lines that now we don’t know which one is the ultimate one. So, from this point of view, there be no warning
However, there might be one. For example, Russia changes the law that allows easier use of nuclear weapons - at the moment it is very strict and Putin can press the button in absolutely rare circumstances.
Then he pulls out from nuclear testing moratorium (he might have already done it though because, apparently, USA never ratified moratorium on their side, so Russia “merely gets on par” with the USA, I don’t remember the details, but it shows how open for interpretation various international conventions and agreements )
And then Putin tests nuclear weapon on “its own territory” - and it can be anywhere from annexed Kherson region to test sites somewhere in Arctic because there is no internationally accepted agreement on how such tests should be conducted.

Re: In the event of nuclear war...
Looking at the Middle Eastern situation it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Iranians making the first move. They are already making noise about retaliation against Israel following the death of a terrorist leader in Tehran and don’t seem to be as concerned about their own population as others might be. I feel that if they had access to a nuke they’d use it even if it meant their own country was flattened in the aftermath. It might be horrible to say but such an event could be the best outcome , it would be a limited exchange , wouldn’t affect Europe and would send out a sobering message not to mention terrorist supporting regimes being depleted.
Re: In the event of nuclear war...
Hard to rationalise with a bunch of old men who believe that their sky fairy will keep them okay and get them to heaven if they obliterate other people who feel exactly the same way.
Then there’s Saudi Arabia. Now they don’t have the bomb but have said that they would if Iran went nuclear. Except they do have the bomb already, it’s just that their bomb is in Pakistan and has a Pakistani flag on it. Saudi effectively bankrolled the Pakistani research and manufacturing of their nuclear arsenal, I’m sure Saudi didn’t do it out of the goodness of their hearts. When and it’s now a ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ Iran goes nuclear, Saudi will call in those favours from Pakistan and that will just cause another arms race in the Middle East - with added religion.
Israel has a couple of hundred warheads, they have justified paranoia and would launch if threatened and turning the Middle East into a parking lot will cause worldwide disruption and destruction. Most economies that rely on oil will be FUBAR. Then you will have refugees fleeing on a scale never seen before and that’s before the fallout would kill millions well away from the blast zones including here in the U.K.
All because mad old men feel the need to get a stiffy and nothing works better than nuclear viagra. New Zealand has never looked so tempting…

Hopefully not in your local parish church on a Sunday!
The vicar would have a heart attack!
