Old wood fired outdoor oven

Post by Yorkshire Andy »

I got given this before it went to the tip as it's rusty and broken..... it was the in-laws it got left outside and the doors rusted shut then they snapped one of the hinge welds....

So one man's scrap and a that.... i still don't think they have fully sussed how actually handy I am with a pile of tools

Bit of a sorry state

Started by freeing up the hinges with a gas torch running mapp gas and let it draw in some 3 in 1 oil which once it cooled you could hear it cracking the rust ...

Broken weld was ground back and old buzz box welder was pulled out and weld replaced the other hinge weld looked cracked too so it also got ground up and re done..

The burner air control flap was also fettled

Main body hit with a flap disc and solvent wiped warmed up slightly (i did remove my eyebrow doing this should have let the solvent wipe gas off fully first  Fortunately the respirator and safety glasses saved my face ) and enamel vht paint applied

Gas burner was used to slowly bake the new paint the instructions actually say to heat the paint to not more than 200°C to aid curing

£440 new so worth the work

Just the chimney to sort

Love it! Your hard work has paid off there Andy. I'm feeling a bit jealous - but no way could I refurbish one like you have. I dont have the right skillset.

Shame about the eyebrow ... but so good that your preps looked after you as intended, and that you've added to your resilience with the stove, in no uncertain terms.

I also had a fireproof shirt on under my jumper usually put one on to weld so had it been a bit worse I'd have had less hair and a red neck / ears

My own fault i was rushing ....

Just before bed last night I put a small lump of wood in and got the oven chamber upto 120°C

Tonight I'll get the chimney done all being well ..

Did get the fire box end nice and warm

Nicely done Andy, a bit heavy for car camping so BBQs and slow cooking in the garden it is. :D
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

According to the instructions it's 33kg I noticed that when I carried it to the back garden went at it thinking it'd be a lot lighter than the wood fired pizza oven it didn't move ...

It's got fire bricks surrounding the fire box which add to the heft and hopefully retain heat when restoking

Definitely a home job unless you go camping in a hgv

Good job done there.

That is very similar to both our indoor and outdoor petchkas that we have been using for @ 13 years now. Great for not only cooking on and in but they give out some great heat for those cold nights inside and out.

Ours have a removable rectangular cast iron top with two circular (again removable) cut outs. Easy to remove either and the circular ones once removed fit our some of our Dutch ovens perfectly.
