I have a small bottle of lavendar oil in my BOB. Also tea tree oil. They are in an extra bag that is intended for longer duration. I call it my INCH bag, but it's really > 3 days I have in mind. I try to keep the weight down for < 3 days. I just checked the date. Bought Sept 2023. They only say to chuck 2 years after opening. I don't think it's been opened. Should be good for a while yet.diamond lil wrote: ↑Sat Feb 07, 2026 4:32 pm Honey is good, so is lavender oil. I remember watching that, the hero died from a wee scratch on his hand that got infected. I was gutted![]()

I love those radio thingsKiwififer wrote: ↑Sat Feb 07, 2026 11:08 am Stuck at work today and listening to one of those ‘end of the world’ radio clips on YouTube as you do, and the character was saying how one of the other characters dies after scratching himself on a rusty nail and catching an infection. The character did not have antibiotics…

I have them on as background noise or if I want to go to sleep. I’m sure a psychiatrist would be able to say something about that!Arzosah wrote: ↑Sun Feb 08, 2026 11:14 amI love those radio thingsKiwififer wrote: ↑Sat Feb 07, 2026 11:08 am Stuck at work today and listening to one of those ‘end of the world’ radio clips on YouTube as you do, and the character was saying how one of the other characters dies after scratching himself on a rusty nail and catching an infection. I think one thing everyone would need to learn - fast - is to take even a minor wound or illness seriously and make sure it is treated in a way that avoids needing those non-existent antibiotics.
I had a salutary lesson in that a few weeks ago. I scratched my self while pruning. It bled a bit and I ignored it until several hours later when I realised the wound was very inflamed. If it had gotten worse it would have been an A&E trip but I decided to treat it overnight and see if it could settle down by itself. I suspected there might still be a bit of rose thorn in there so coated it in Magnesium Sulphate drawing compound ie Epsom salts made into a paste, and left that on overnight under a plaster.
Next morning there was a dramatic improvement so I was able to duck the A&E trip and antibiotics.
But lesson learned to make sure even small wounds get cleaned up properly straightaway which would be so much more important without an A&E safety net.

I got a small thorn stuck in my hand. Could have got nasty. Had to dig it out with a needle. I was careful. The skin on the end of my thumb was quite thick, so it was ok. Didn't bleed. But you don't want stuff like that embedded. I steralised the needle with a lighter, and looked at the thorn with a loupe. Both are part of my prep gear. After that, I ordered some nice leather gardening gloves.
Currently battling dermatitis on my hands. I think soap is the main cause. Only using vaseline on them at them moment. Wearing nitrile gloves in shower, cotton fingerless gloves underneath, and rubber band around wrist. Will try not to get soap inside. Can't do cycling or anything til I get it sorted. Weird thing is it has got worse in the last couple of weeks, since I started taking measures. So first measures - Zero Cream, Betnovate and Simple shower gel/hand wash, had a bad effect. Trying to avoid contact with nitrile and washing up gloves. But I really need to wash my cotton gloves in case of any chemicals from new. I'm even avoiding sliding my hand down the bannister going down the stairs, though I have my fingers on it just in case.

Only had my heating on for about 4 hours yesterday. My room got to 20°. Was about 18.5° at bed time, and 17.5 in the morning. Didn't need any electric radiator, apart from the usual 10 minutes when I get out of bed before turning the central heating on. I was considering dropping boiler temp for a few days, but the saving would only be a few pence. It should get a bit colder on Friday, 1° at night.
