Safe storage of lipo power banks

Post by Yorkshire Andy »

Well here's a prime example of why you need to practice safe storage of lipo power banks ...

Let's set the scene around April 2023 I bought a clutch of Goodman's solar panel shod Goodman's 10,000mah usb power banks

Exhibit a :

Used a few times a year then topped up to full then drained back till the 3rd led is lit taken on holiday in carry on as a backup for phones etc

About 1.5 months ago a former colleague was doing a big charity event and asked if he could borrow a few power banks so I lent him my afiry and a couple of ankers at that point all were happy in the ammo box I had a quick look through got a couple of others out to exercise and charge back up....

He returned them yesterday which had been planned he'd had his car in the garage etc etc plus very sore feet from a 200 mile run!!

So set about making sure they were full hed charged them before return (always nice ) so last night used them to top off my phone and spent the afternoon charging other stuff ..

Without dragging this out any more than needed opened the box to be confronted by this::

Stored at about 75% charge

Fortunately nothing untoward happened found an Anker when I lent my mate the banks had a crack in the case too need to get some rock salt and give them a good soak in a bucket for a few weeks currently outside anyway from anything

A subject close to my heart and one of my recurring worry beads. Basically after finding out the exciting way what happens when you try to charge a lithium battery pack which has been stored in a hot environment for several years...

Probably like a fair few people here, I've accumulated a growing number of batteries, including those in old laptops. Recently did a bit of research into how lithium batteries age, to find out that they can spontaneously combust. As such all the old stuff is now out the house and in the spare shed, awaiting disposal.

Now, small battery banks are one thing, but again like others on here I guess, some of my batteries are now pretty hefty. My Aferiy P280 is 2KwH. The thought of that going up worries me a lot, but I need it in the house. Also need the ecoflow. They are new, and from a trusted (ish) manufacturer, but it still gives me the twitches.

I keep mine in an ammo box with the seal removed, on the tiled kitchen floor. I'm not charged them for a while, actually, could do with checking them.
In the ammo box I have 3 power banks, the battery I use for my strimmer, drill, and (useless) mini vacuum cleaner. Also some 18650s for the emergency radio.

I should consider moving it to the cellar during a heatwave.
