Going to give this a go, but meshcore rather than meshtastic. 2 boards on order plus a couple of better antennas.

Well, after a fair bit of faffing around, have got this working. Ended up getting a pair of Heltec v4's and some better antennas. I'm running meshcore rather than meshtastic.
And it works. Am getting multiple hops (which meshtastic can't do - 3 max). So far i've had a 20 hop up to yorkshire from sussex, and a 26 hop from Bretagne, France.
However, it's flaky. Sometimes it works a treat, other times silence. It really depends on how many other nodes are in your area, and the repeaters you can see. But for £70 i've got a new toy. I think as there is further adoption and the software / infrastructure gets better, it has a lot of promise. And totally off grid.
