"Provision" App

Post by GillyBee »

Hi All,

I have just discovered a new app which aims to help both with putting your stores together and assessing them for any obvious gaps. It is called Provision and is available on the web and Android. It is firmly aimed at the UK and looks as if it has been written to help both beginners and more seasoned preppers. I have been having a play this morning and think it might be useful.
I like that it is very open about where your data lives and exactly what is collected. It is also helping me see that I really am fine for survival food but may want some morale boosters (which need to be VERY well hidden!)

Has anyone else bumped into this? What do you think?

So how does it work? You can all your provisions and it tells you how long they'll last for? What happens when I eat a tin I scanned?

I've just had a good read on line about all this ..the man who jas designed and made this ....
Dominic Brooks ..the news call him a "preparedness enthusiastic " he's from Manchester and wanted to keep track of his supplies ..he couldn't find any form of app so he built it...
Its pretty interesting I actually understood it and it looks really easy to use and I'm useless online
I can see how it will really help people who want all their info in one place ...its organised and informative
I have very little apps . don't own a computer don't have any social media and the only group in in is this ..I'm.just so distrusting of most things ..I'm not sure I'd want all the info there if it was on my phone and someone nabbed it ...but if you're not like me GillyBee is right it could be very useful .

Hi all, Dom here, I’m the one who made it. I found this while researching press coverage of the apps, so I thought it was only fair to say hello rather than lurk in the shadows.

GillyBee, thanks, that’s a kind write-up. The morale boosters line made me laugh because it’s exactly what it told me about my own store. Plenty of pasta and tins, not a single bar of chocolate. but I've rectified this!

Frnc, it works like this. You tell it who’s in the house, then put in what you’ve got, either by scanning the barcode or typing it, with a quantity and a date. It then works out how many days the lot would last for your household, and which thing runs out first. It doesn’t just divide a total by a daily amount. It walks forward a day at a time, uses the soonest-dated stuff first and ignores anything that would have gone off before you got to it. When you eat a tin you just knock the quantity down by one. It’ll also tell you what’s coming up to its date so you can eat it and replace it rather than find it in 2031.

GeeGee, your worry is a fair one and I’d rather answer it straight than wave it away. Nothing has to be on your phone at all, it works in a web browser on a computer or a tablet too. The account is a normal email and password login, there’s no tracking, no adverts, and I never see what’s in anyone’s cupboard, only overall numbers like how many accounts there are. You can export everything you’ve put in and delete the account whenever you like. If you’d rather not have a list of your stores anywhere digital at all, that’s a perfectly sensible position and a notebook does the same job, just without the maths.

It’s now on iPhone as well as Android and the web, and it’s free. If anyone tries it and something’s wrong or missing, tell me, here or at support@provisionapp.co.uk. This lot are exactly who it was built for, so the criticism is more use to me than the praise.
