Recently got a few new 25 litre water containers. Can anyone advise best way to sterilise the container before use.
Ive seen mention of Milton tabs / fluid or bleach, however not sure on how many tabs / or how much bleach to use?
I was going to wash out container first with a few drops of fairy, then rinse out a few times , after that im not sure on the sterilising side quantities or makes of products to buy, whether to go with Milton tabs or bleach to sterilise?
Would be most grateful if anyone could provide direction in simple terms .
Sterilising new water container procedure??
Re: Sterilising new water container procedure??
I would wash with fairy or similar and rinse then follow Milton instructions…

If you use a product that's meant for baby bottles, no need to wash with detergent.
I recommend Tesco's own brand sterilising tablets, or milton, made to the recommended strength. Follow by a cold rinse from your mains pressure cold tap, but that's not essential.

Same.
My Milton packet states 1 tablet per 5 litres so, 5 tablets per container.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.
Re: Sterilising new water container procedure??
Personally I would do the washing up liquid first, only takes seconds. This is a one time thing for new container.
Then I do the following every 6 months. Run tap for few minutes if not frequently used.
1 Milton per 5 litres, ie 5 tabs in this case . Turn on side after 15 minutes to sterilise the top. Empty after half an hour. Fill w fresh water.
Also I put Oasis tabs in the stored water.. You can get 33 mg tabs that do 5 litres, so five of those.
Keep away from light and change every six months
25 kg is heavy by the way.

Re: Sterilising new water container procedure??
If you are using big containers then Milton can also be used to purify the water at a rate of 1 tab per 100l or 1/4 tab per 25l container.

Oasus tabs are smaller and a better choice for smaller containers.

Re: Sterilising new water container procedure??
Thanks for the speedy replies.
So once the containers have been cleaned, sterilised filled and water purification tablets added, and container dated - after 6 months if needed would the water be safe to drink straight out of the container?
Or would you need to add more water purification tablets to the container before drinking?
What saftey checks need to be done before drinking the water?

Re: Sterilising new water container procedure??
If the SHTF i would drink it.
If just rotating, use to do the washing up/ water plants and refill with fresh tap water
I'd just aerate it (pour out and back to reoxygenate the water).
