Eurgh! That's a very good point, actually...imagine if the whole family are 'incapacitated' at the same time!

I have got some bits and bobs that are a few months out of date - not much at all - a few jars of pasta sauces, beans, and so on, which I have no problem with. But years and years out of date would probably put me off. But surely rice/dried pasta would be okay? I thought that dried food would just lose a bit of taste, the older it got?
And on that note, I've got a couple of cartons of UHT milk that I found lurking in the back of the cupboards today - it's expiry date was May 11. Any thoughts on whether I should throw it out or give it a whirl?
UHT milk is fine out of date.As long it's been kept in a cool place( not exposed to extremes)I routinely drink it 6 mths off date.Dried rice, pasta etc. As long as it's dry and cool will be fine. It just loses nutritional value after date.It will still be a belly-filler though.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

UHT milk has a very long shelflife, we keep 24 cartons at a time, its supposed to not go off until you actually open it so it can be kept on open shelves, once open though it must be kept in the fridge. as with everything else we rotate this too, new ones to the back, use from the front.

A person after my own heart!!! - I do the same - I got a batch recently that expires in March 2012 - this is beginning of winter prep - I broke my back on ice years ago so EXTREMELY wary of walking on anything less than fresh powdered snow - so prepared for when I can't get to the shop and grocery delivery can't get to me either - will be adding some more to my cache if I can get any that expires April next year.

Don't know who you buy from but noticed ASDA's 1litre UHT milk has jumped from 72p to 78p per litre but you can still get a pack of 6 x 1 litre UHT milk for £3.00 saving a massive £1.68 on every 6 litres which is alot if you buying 24 and like me 30!

I always check prices on stuff. Sometimes it works out better to buy the bulk packs, but sometimes it doesn't. So be wary! I always check the price per kg which is stated on the label on the shelf.

The label on the shelf tells you the price per Kilo or 100g or per item depending on what the product is.

Always a good way of telling you if it is a bargain or not. Something might look cheaper but it could be a smaller tin/packet or it might just contain less.

I used to work for a commercial artist's and Domestos were having a push with 25% extra free. One of the artists commented on the fact that the box that the dozen bottles came in was the same size as the old one and that surely if the bottles were bigger then then the box they came in should be bigger also.

I contacted the customer who told me "We are just filling the bottles to the top"!!!!!!!

1 litre cartons LIDL UHT milk is 54p we just bought it in TESCO for 49p, we dont BUY 24 we keep a STOCK of 24 and top up each week to that level, we used to keep a stock of 12 but last winter were snowed in for 3-4 weeks and nearly ran out of milk was down to the last 2 cartons, so i've doubled the stock this year.

Always handy to have some powdered milk in stock. I know it doesn't taste as good as proper milk but when you have been that brasic that you have had cornflakes with water, anything is a bonus.

Plus it lasts a lot longer than UHT milk.
