It comes as a solid a bit like a thick spread, it can be mixed with honey to make a toast spread (by itself you use much less if you want to use it like a spread or its too rich), but a good use for it is one teaspoons worth in any hot soup. It WARMS YOU UP nicely as it has certain nutritional properties that means that the body can use it quick and easy.
You gotta shop round for cheap coconut oil though. Health food shops sell it, but that's the ultra healthy "extra virgin" which is pricey as buggery and if what you are looking for is warmth in cold weather, then a cheaper Asian supermarket one will be best.
Shelf life = 2 years !!!

I used to make and sell soap, and you can add a small amount to moisturise. Also can use it in bath melts. LOL bet thats put you right off eating it now
Re: Coconut Oil
Don't know if you can still buy it, but in small round tins like shoe polish tins, you get coconut oil. Hard white stuff. My grandparents used it to heal scars, can tell you from experience it does this wonderfully well.

Re: Coconut Oil
I got it from an asian shop over the road from my son in Edinburgh. It was in bottles. I added essential oils bicarb and epsom salts, rolled it into wee balls or melted it and poured into petit four cases for bath melts.
I use shea butter blended with lavender for moisturiser.
