Canning and bottling.

Post by preppingsu »

Discussions have been taking place on the other thread 'What Preps are you doing?' so I thought I would start another one here to carry on the discussion.

This is a good link to discuss canning or bottling of fruit and veg. It doesn't talk about meat.

National Centre for Home Preservation (American!) but it seems they know what they are talking about.

These are great Su, thanks. :)
I wrote to Prestige a while back because in the States they make canners, but not here, and asked if they were considering making them for the UK market anytime as there'd be a huge demand, but they said nope. :(

I did think about writing to Lakeland Ltd as they have a good history of finding equipment and remaking it etc. They may consider selling the correct equipment if enough people emailed them :)

Recently I found out that you can use a WMF Pressure Cooker to preserve low acid foods such as veg and meat. Here's the instruction manual page 9 has the relevant info.

I'm still not completely won over though. I'm giving serious thought to asking my American pal to send me one of these

Even if I have import charges to pay, the price difference will hardly be worth worrying over and it will process loads more in one go.

I meant to add, I use my prestige pressure cooker to process high acid foods that are generally preserved using the water bath method. It's MUCH quicker and more reliable. I wrote a tutorial, if it's of any use to anyone, it's too big to post though, maybe a mod could do something with it.

I'll happily share. The document is 1500 words.
