Best Before Date?

Post by Rayman »

OK guys, I will be rotating, however..........

Are best before dates that important?,

I was in Tescos tonight, looking at tinned fruit for storage, the bbe dates were mainly 2012, that was mainly for the tecos own cheap tins, I ended up getting 2 tins of del monte fruit cocktail for 75p each with a 2014 date on, I would of prefered to buy the tesco tinned peaches for 26p though, but no real good bbe on.

Also, I have quite a few 1kg bags of rice with 2013 on, if the rice is unopened, will it be ok well after 2013?, I cant see why not.

I'm just wondering what your policies are on best before dates, thanks.

It is as stated... best before..... if eaten after that date, flavour and nutritional value may not be as great...

Just go for it.

However as with anything don't take my word for it, do your own research as I have and be aware that anything eaten is done so at risk.

That's the disclaimer out the way.....

Just go for it.

As I understand it a "best before" date only refers to the nutrition/taste/looks etc of the item

But a "use by" date refers to the safety of the item so I would pay a lot more attention to those.

When I got laid off I did start hitting my preps and some of that was a while past the BBD. Tasted ok. No problems with the tinned fruits, meats or veg apart from one can of fermenting spuds. Squash gets a bit insipid, Pringles were startlingly in good nick. Fruit juice is a NO. Couldn't even use the damned stuff as a wine base

If your happy with tins just make sure you add some multi vitamins to your preps. Over time the nutritional value drops somewhat, so you can still fill your belly with a hearty meal but you need that top up.

I ate a tin of pear halves a couple of months back and they were about 3 years out of date. Tasted fine and looked ok too. No disolouration.

As for rice, I fill a 2 litre pop bottle and then vacuum seal it, should last considerably longer than the date on it.

Did the same with some pasta. Took forever to get it in the sodding bottles and because there was a lot of space in it, the bottle made some funny noises when I vacuumed it although it didn't split or crack.

Anybody tried the broken Basmati Rice from Tesco? It is about the chepest I have found but Wifey recons it will be minging so won't let me buy any. If it's good I might be able to convince her to get some. We tried the cheap rice from ASDA and it went like porridge. Not good with a Chicken Tikka Masala. Stear well clear of it. :(

Try this...its not much use in complete societal breakdown and a power outage but apart from that.....

Thanks Richard, you just helped me learn a lot about myself.

I went to the website you linked to and the first thing I did was click on the picture of the chocolate. :D

Apparently, (just to save everyone else doing it, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) a bar of Milk chocolate will last up to 10 months in a pantry or ten minutes if wifey is about.

I have some army rations that have Yorkies in them (they aint for civvies or girls) which I am certain are a lot older than that. I need to have a look at the date on them but I know for a fact I would eat chocolate a lot older than 10 months. It would need to be green and riddled with maggots before I would throw it out.

Be lucky (and the Milky bars are on me)

I think PreppingSu might challenge your wife. Social unrest over chocolate. Aren't humans great.

I had those Yorkies in the RAF Reserves - like a badge of honour but chocolate. Can't find them in civilian live though. I think they are linked to the Official Secrets Act.
