My daughter. She is the only reason why I want to survive, and why I haven't checked out already. I've told God that if she goes, I go too. I'm not sticking around in this lifetime on my own without her.
With my medical history, I'm surprised I'm still alive today, and that is no joke. 've tried the odd ciggie, probably about 4 in total if I had to count, and I do like a JD and coke every now and then, like once every 4 months or so (also not joking, never been much into drinking or smoking - I prefer my tea).
The only reason why I'm prepping is so that I can provide for my child. The only reason why I want to survive is because I don't want to leave her alone to cope.
Why do you want to survive
Re: Why do you want to survive
My son primarily and then the rest of my family, we lost his mum shortly after he was born and so I will survive so that I can make sure he does too. I think that gave me the drive and determination to give him as normal a home life as possible despite loosing his mum, and when diagnosed with throat cancer made me state quite clearly that it was NOT gonna get me (and two years later it still hasnt )
I dont smoke anymore, drink only a couple of times a month and haven't jumped out of an aircraft since he was born
I will be around to see him into manhood and will hae given him the skills he needs to survive and to be a good man, regardless of how the world may fare around us.

I dont really see it as a choice - I want to survive cos I aint ready to die yet I also want to see my daughter into adulthood much the same as everyone else.
Re: Why do you want to survive
bit like the rest of us, you want to survive cos you dont fancy the alternative!Alleycat wrote:I dont really see it as a choice - I want to survive cos I aint ready to die yet.
Re: Why do you want to survive
Some interesting answers, Most appear to put family as their want to survive, or is that "need" to survive?
What about those amongst us who are single, or don't have a dependant?
What if the "need" to go into survival mode has left you the only survivor of your immediate family, might be a fire, flood, ferry disaster, car crash, pandemic, nuclear attack, war, famine, terminal illness that comes along, are you just going to curl up and give up? what makes you want to survive then?
I lost a daughter due to still birth, two years later my wife started divorce proceedings because of the stress that caused, but I didn't want to give up, I didn't want to just survive, I wanted to grab myself by the boot straps and get my life back on track. There were a number of times I really did want to curl up and scream at the world to go away, but those times went past and today is a very different place.
So what really makes us want to survive?

Re: Why do you want to survive
Some would say that survival is a basic instinct in all life, it is a core driver to want to reproduce and continue the species. I am certainly not religious, I understand base desires but there is also the more evolved part of our existence which has needs such as family and not liking the alternative.
For me, there is the drive to live through whatever life throws at us and to see what comes out the other end. The weird thing is that whatever may (hopefully not!!) bring about an EOTWAWKI, there is a bit of scientist in me which wonders how mankind would survive, what would society be like afterwards and would the collective experience bring about an evolution of thinking within the species to prevent it happening again?
So for me, base survival instinct, family and kids, scientific experiment

Re: Why do you want to survive
ok aside from the realy simple "cause I dont want to die"
I realy do want to be able to help other people... now not in an immediate sense of feeding the hungry but in an abstract way.
If I survive sitx with my prepping group (which isnt realy formed yet - but Im working on it) then perhaps, given the right situation, we can become a small oasis of self reliance (relativly).
Maybe thats very self congratulatory, but if enough of these enclaves exist then we become a pool of resourses that can assist a recovery within our area from whatever the situation may be.
skippy

Re: Why do you want to survive
I want to survive just so I can say “I told you so” and “see, I was right”
But also I have managed to survive this long, so I am sure as hell not going to mess up now, now that I’m having so much fun

Re: Why do you want to survive
I want to survive cos I'm just so damn nosy I can't bear the thought of not...not being here, not knowing how things turn out, not being able to say I told you so, not being able to read all the books I haven't got round to or see all the films or find out if Ken Barlow is ever gonna quit Corrie or if I'll ever manage to write the next Harry Potter, or win the lottery or....well, you get the idea
