democracy will be a luxury in post sitX .... The communities with a democratic basis will certainly be the ones everyone wants to be a part of ... but will probably be too slow to react decisivly to changing conditions.

I think ur right Skippy..

In the beggining I think it will need ppl to take charge of their immediate own.. It will proberbly be that these ppl will take charge of stragglers that they come across.. and only once a group is big enough to defend and feed itself could any form of demorcracy be put in to place.
Decisions will need to be made without the slowness of discussions.. I guess this will allow some cultist idealists to take advantage of the scared and hungry.. i wont be one of them!..lol

Reading your post actually made me think.. I kinda have the same feeling.. i am a leader of sorts already, ppl look to me for advice and information or help.. So i can only imagine in a SHTF situ that that would just become 10fold.. esp as I am a prepper and therefore already organised as best i can be.
I think you kinda understand where I am comming from. Dont get me wrong I am not going to force my views or oppinons on anybody. My reason for wanting to survive though is because I feel I am "meant to". Which as I am not a spiritual or religious guy leaves me feeling uneasy with that notion.

I just have a feeling in a SHTF situation I will end up being called upon by others to make descions and help others.

Very glad it is a discussion point tho as I have never talked about it before!

A good watch is both series of "Survivors" although it is a complete work of fiction it does show some of the characters that may be found after the event.

Characters like Tom Price, in the original he was a Welsh Tramp, who was always passing the buck, avoiding doing the work and became a rapist and murderer who let a less intelligent and less capable person be accused, found guilty and executed before admitting his guilt.

In the re-make he was in prison at the start and murdered the only guard still alive and then was used to do a lot of the dirty work as the community hard man.

The leader of the community was Abby Grant, a middle class Mother in the original, a working Mum in the re-make.

A search of youtube for both of the series is worth doing, but buying it from Amazon would give a better take on it as is easier to watch.

I'm not even bothered about famly tbh, there are a couple people I would hunt out if safe to do so because I know they have a desire to survive. I think people prove this already in the willingness to do any job to pay the bills rather then go unemployed and lose what they have worked for. When I left the army I cleaned toilets for 12 months, never been treated worse by strangers in asda, looking down their nose at me, even if they were unemployed. But my desire to succeed, let me where I am today, years ahead of my counter parts.

I know similar people would face adversity, stand tall and do not fear.
I've done a stint cleaning toilets, and early morning supermarket cleaning, leaflet posting, I even worked on a burger van once for 2 months even though I'm a vegetarian. I have no issue with people who genuinely need Benefits and thats what they are there for but for the rest of us who are able to work you should do whatever job is available at the time - quit the snobbery and earn your money and I salute anyone who has done the same, whether they are still there or whether they have used it as a stepping stone, too much snobbery about cleaners - without them we would all be knee deep in S**t. :)

At New Year, I was having a bit of a morbid think about my life and had a sudden blinding insight that only happens when you've drunk too much alcohol :)
I realised that nearly all my life I've been dealing with the most difficult/impossible people you could find and I thought (after pouring another drink) that maybe that's my role (penance?) in life - maybe we all have a role in life and maybe sometimes we realise what the role is.
I'm totally and completely unreligious (sorry if that offends anyone) but I can see what Pathfinder is saying. I'm pretty sure that if tshtf I'll be the one stuck in the room with the arguing /awkward/ impossible people who are hell bent on putting everyone else at risk. It's like I know that if there's a nutter on the bus it'll be me sat next to 'em. Pathfinder knows he's gonna end up sorting out the sheeple who are getting their knickers in a twist and running about in a panic.
Maybe that's another thing to bear in mind - what sort of role you can imagine yourself in after disaster has struck and how you intend to deal with it. Maybe I should make plans to get the hell out of the way.....

i think that is the difference between preppers and sheeple, the sheeple will let themselves be lead, whereas preppers dont need to be lead, they just get on and do what needs doing.

Fair point Bulldog...so where do we stand as preppers - do we prepare to help the sheeple or do we prepare to avoid them and go it alone?

you cant save everyone, in most cases avoidance would be best, especially in the early days.( your family/group come first!)

The first rule of helping someone who is in trouble (whatever that trouble might be ) is dont get yourself into trouble doing so, as you then wont be able to help.
In sitX you can and possibly should help, but only if it does not significantly degrade your own ability to survive.
