Had a local firm acouple of years ago who produced their own veg oil with winter additive and was about 40p a litre cheaper than the forecourts.Did all the usual internet searches,my vehicle and age was okay so went ahead.was told that after the first 4-5 weeks to change the fuel filter as the oil would re-act with the dregs of diesel left in the tank and cause it to become sluggish which it did.changed the fuel filter (cheap) and ran superbly for eight months and saved a packet in fuel costs. In winter when the cold can make the oil a bit thicker it was worth warming the coils a couple of times before starting.
However during one journey i emptied about 3/4 of tank of fuel all over the road and it turned out that the oil had corroded the rubber fuel line which put me off using it after that,The local producers factory then blew up a few months later.
I really miss queuing in trafic on a summers day, windows down with the smell of chips in the air

It seems as if there are other problems too.

Two "illicit bio-diesel production plants" have been dismantled in Peterhead, HM Revenue and Customs has said.
Grampian Police and HMRC raided the sites, close to the town centre, on Thursday.
Officers seized nearly 4,000 litres of illicit fuel, 750 litres of methanol, 200 litres of kerosene, pumps, equipment and business records.
Two men were questioned by HMRC and investigations are continuing.
Graeme Anderson, assistant director of HMRC specialist investigations, said: "Illegal bio-diesel sites and those involved are creating a cheap and unregulated supply that honest producers cannot compete with."

Re: Bio-Diesel and Cookin Oil in you car.
Rotting the fuel lines and seals is an often quoted problem with running SVO. Even poorly made bio-diesel can have a similar effect as my parents found out. They did all the research etc, even got a local friendly garage to confirm they could run it. Rotted all the seals in the engine, needed a complete rebuild

LPG dries out the carbs on some vehicles, so need wet fuel through them to keep them from leaking everywhere.
Nothing is ever easy is it

Too damned right. Even once I have got all my alternative energy kit in place at some future date, its still gonna require maintenance.the-gnole wrote:LPG dries out the carbs on some vehicles, so need wet fuel through them to keep them from leaking everywhere.

I just want an alternative energy power source that requires no maintenance, no energy input and just does its thing. Nothings like that in reality

Re: Bio-Diesel and Cookin Oil in you car.
All you need to know is "Old vehicles are much more likely to run off Veg oil than new vehicles"
I know the old ford escord vans are great at this i used to have one.
A couple of days after any event your not going to be able to use any vehicle anyway. Your new life is going to be all about your immediate area.
Your commuting days will be over so filling up the car wont be a worry.

I ran a 2001 Landrover 110 TD5 for five years on a 50/50 mix of corn oil at under a quid a litre and pump diesel, not big savings but at least it kept grabbing chancellors that little bit further out of my pocket. I had no issues with engine over 70,000 mls
Re: Bio-Diesel and Cookin Oil in you car.
I had a 200tdi 110 land rover defender, i didn't bother with home made bio diesel or expensive CONversion kits. I went to asda and bought the huge drums on veg oil, filled the trolly and took them out to the landy and filled it straight up. Only once at -5c did i have trouble, and that was cure with 3 goes on the glow plugs. Sadly sold it and used the money as a deposit on my house, however i will get another very soon.

YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .
Re: Bio-Diesel and Cookin Oil in you car.
I saw a Musso near my house, ugly as sin but i heard good things about them. Defenders are expensive even for a wreck,I'm keeping my options open. Isuzu troopers look good value.unsure wrote:JOE90 wrote:I had a 200tdi 110 land rover defender, i didn't bother with home made bio diesel or expensive CONversion kits.
