Planting 2012

Anyone started planting yet? If so - what have you got in the ground?

Got a row of onions in and sowed chillis and peppers indoors.
Next: Broad beans, leeks and toms.

My ground is frozen solid and has been for over a week. I have a back garden full of ice sculptures - the hens water is a solid lump every day & these are all dotted around like wee ice ornaments

i planted some garlic in december but cant see any growth yet and i am currently chitting my potatoes !

Still got some leeks and parsnips still in.
Celery has been got by the frost and cold.
Nothing else planted and not planning for a few weeks yet. I usually start around the Easter hols time.

Bought seed potatoes and going to start chitting them...too cold to think of planting up here until April..

Lets get this thread moving its about time for you southern lot to start planting Tocsin I'm the same, I can't plant out until mid April but I will start salady stuff indoors on the windowsills. My front faces due south and seeds get a good start there - when they're bigger I move them round the back. Yesterday I put in seeds of early lettuce and rocket and spinach.
Re the garden I need a son to come and dig a bit for me when it warms up a bit. I not growing so many tatties this year as you can buy a sack for a fiver - will just do some nice tasty new ones in bins and bags.
Putting in kale, sorrel, chard, onions, turnip greens. All of these will do us and the hens too. Lettuce and chives in tubs and herbs in the new herb garden (a 3ft square bit of soil at present lol). All I need is some bloody sunshine this year unlike last

broccoli and brussels still in the ground and still eating them, just finished eating all our spuds from last year,had enough to last us September until now,will be chitting some to plant out, preparing a bed for the Broad Beans-which are usually the first thing we plant.

I've found that although it's tempting to get planting as soon as possible, I prefer to wait an extra couple of weeks. 9 times out of 10, you can bet we get a hard frost that knocks everything back if we are too eager!

We have been getting ready though. Yesterday I added another raised bed, which makes 9. We have planted more fruit this year, 2 pear trees, a cherry, 4 grape vines, 3 blackcurrant and a couple of blackberry.

Also, this year, I'm trying something new called Oca (Oxalis Tuberosa). They look a bit like Jerusalem artichokes and are harvested over the winter. Plus, they don't have the same effect as fartichokes.....
