I wouldnt use the word "want" to survive. I need to survive is basic instinct.

Re: Why do you want to survive
Appreciate spiritual belief is not an easy topic to discuss on any forum & I guess may even been banned here (???) but there is some interesting & understandable ambivalence about spirituality in this thread. While it may not be a common reason for folk to want to survive it may significantly improve your chances. Extreme belief & extreme unbelief have led to terror and genocide ,but almost without exception all human communities / cultures surviving into the common era have had a spirituality. Science suggests we are hard wired for it because it has survival / evolutionary advantage? Just like any survival strategy /prep you just don't want to overdo it , e.g become a lentil fundamentalist with 10 years of lentils and no fuel . I suspect rather than become less important when big SHTF spiritual matters will seem more important?

i think you'll be too busy just staying alive and surviving, but what the heck, if it gets you through the day, i wont knock it, its just not for me.

Re: Why do you want to survive
I want to survive because I want to be there for my family as others have said, because its human nature, (survive or become dinner,) and also, I am just rather curious to see how life pans out after some sort of event, being it ecconomic colapse or totat SHTF. I am not very spiritual, feeling that really we should be looking after each other and this planet abit more rather than worrying about which religion is the right one, but nor does that mean I am afraid of death - rather curious to find out what all the fuss was about but that curiosity means I'd far rather hang about here abit more. I want to see if I can cut it should push comes to shove in any given situation and to protect my daughters and be with my husband. But if they did not survive I would still want to go on just to prove that I could and to pass memories and experience to others. Curiosity has been what has driven the human race since we first tied to walk on two legs, padded about Africa for a bit and then meandered out into the rest of the world.

Re: Why do you want to survive
I've been reading through these posts with a lot of interest today, and wondering why I want to keep going...
To be honest, I haven't thought about it that much. I kind of agree with the people posting here who have said that you just do want to go on... And you don't want to die.
If I'm really honest though, there is a part of me that thinks it may be interesting and exciting. Perhaps, as someone said, that's the "scientist" in me. But I do wonder sometimes if part of it is about giving my life now some kind of meaning and purpose. I keep going in order to keep going... there's a riddle.
Does anyone else think like that? The rational part of me knows that things will probably be pretty awful after TSHTF and that I've probably been watching too many programmes like Survivors... Even so... there is an allure...

Re: Why do you want to survive
For me its about resilience. I really do not expect the end of the world anytime soon. Prepping for me is more about sustainability. My interest lies in reducing what I consume from unsustainable sources in the world and trying to be more conscious of what I buy. Allot of things I have done have not been great investments or at least the return on the investment will be very long. Having said that, solar, insulation and other things have reduced my bills by a large amount, so if I did loose my income then those improvements would help allot with my quality of life. I also like the idea of being closer to nature and as a hobby woodcraft, hunting etc, is a form of prepping as well as a hobby.
So for me, its not so much about surviving some catastrophe as it is about learning to live comfortably on rapidly reducing global resources. Surviving an event is a bonus, and becomes much more likely when you accept that you live with nature and not constantly fighting against it. Learning new skills is fun

Re: Why do you want to survive
i guess most people dont think there will be a great catastrophe, the people in Thailand didnt know they would get a tidal wave, the Japanese didnt expect the Nuclear power station would go into meltdown, The Americans never expected 9/11 and the Londoners didnt expect 7/7, we may not expect these things but that dosent stop them happening, all we can do is prepare and hope for the best.
Re: Why do you want to survive
I don't want to survive as you can get by with out prepping, I want to be comfortable when everyone around me is just getting by.
