We already have a Land Rover Defender 110 in our household. A second one is definately in the works but this one will be a Defender 90. A Great 4x4 which will do everything you need. Accessories is a must to help through the worst scenarios. I have listed below some of the must have bits and bobs.
A Snorkel - To help your engine breath when driving through rivers, floods or streams.
Front ball bar - A Metal one is recommended. A Locked gate or a group of violent thugs or a gang can easily be run down.
Blacked out Windows. - This will ensure complete privacy of all your stocked items and supplies to keep them well hidden.
A Descent Roof Rack. - To carry extra supplies, weapons, food etc.
Off Road Tyres. - This will ensure when driving off road you have the best grip possible.
Sump Guard. - To protect the undercarriage of your 4x4 when driving over heavy terrain. Rocks, Broken concrete etc.
Spares. - Spare bulbs, window wipers etc. A Spare wheel is a must. Best kept on the outside of vehicle as takes up alot of space inside.
Reinforced Glass or Perspex. - The last thing you want is a broken windshield or window. Tougher glass will make the car last longer and could potentially save your life.
Navigation - Chances are if a major catastrophe happens the Satellites could go down leaving all GPS devices such as Sat Navs or phones useless. A Compass and heavy detailed maps is always a necessity when traveling long distances.
Winch. - There is always the possibility, no matter how good your 4x4 is of getting stuck. A good Winch is defo a must have.
Higher Supsension - The Higher your suspension the more role on the car when you go round corners. But on the plus side. You can travel over heavier terrain with peace of mind.
Spotlights. - In some scenarios, street lights will be turned off leaving cities and country both in pitch black at night. Descent spotlights are a must to see as far ahead as possible. Might even be worth considering changing your Headlights for HID ones. They are much brighter and alot more reliable than standard ones. Makes a massive improvement.
A Roof Tent. - Handy to have. Great for all Seasons. Keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. A Canvas one is the best option.

i believe in this country as at present(not after TSHTF..obviously) blackened out windows MAY be illegal? we had tinted film on one of our previous cars windows...garage said this make MOT certificate null and void!

75 per cent of light through the front windscreen
70 per cent of light through the front side windows
In most modern vehicles there is a slight tint added to the windows when they are made. If you add any more tint it’s likely to result in the windows failing to meet the legal requirements.
The rules on tinted windows don’t apply to the rear windscreen or the rear passenger windows. Which means you can have the windows at the back (Where all your supplies and food is) as dark as you want keeping everything hidden safely.
A subject I know about as my friends and I have had several cars with blacked out windows. And also learnt the hard way by getting fines for tinting the front windows to dark.

you forgot diff guards and a fuel tank guard i fitted roof spots so if you drive through deep water at night you dont blow your driving lights and you going to need a split charger if its a 200 or 300 tdi a second altarnator thats what i got fitted to my disco as if one fails you can link the second altanator to run the carmrboom wrote:We already have a Land Rover Defender 110 in our household. while your at it , fit a steering guard or sumo bars , if you fit a good winch bumper then there`s no need for a bull bar ,as they come built in. worth considering are waffle boards , you can use these as window guards aswell as there intended use in deep mud ,good for bridging gully`s as well .
decent mud tyres are at best noisey on the road but are the best investment you can make , dont forget your going to need straps and shackles to go with your winch .
you can get by with a suspension lift if you fit standard size mud tyres .
i have a cb in my disco for off road use , fit a good one and a springer arial and you`ll only do it the once .

Also to add to your list
A tin (tins in the case of a Land Rover ) of tyre inflator. (You can buy one for a couple of quid)
A compressor/ footpump
A jack and wheel brace!
Obviously if you had a flat you would change the wheel (to the spare) but the time/location of a puncture may say 'get on the road again quick'. I once had two flat tyres on 1 journey! My tin of tyre inflator acrtually came into use*
The wheel wrench as supplied with most new cars often has insufficient leverage to undo a wheel- as tyre depots often tighter the wheel nuts with an air wrench. Make sure your wrench & you are actually capable of undoing the wheel nuts!
* modern cars often don't come with a spare wheel but with a tin of inflator & a compressor - carry an extra can?
Don't laugh at this the AA often get called out to people with flats - only to find the owners can't change the wheel because they have lost the locking wheel nuts key!

punture fix is only good on about 40% of puntured tyres , i carry 2 innertubes and a couple of tyre levers .that and a highlift jack is enough for most situations .if you have a aircon compressor to fit your engine ,as in a 300tdi , these are more than capable or inflating a flat tyre with about an hours work modifying it to go to a tank , i use an old air tank off a wagon , but you can also use an old compressor reciever . good for airbeds as well

Yeh i must admit. I have been in that situation of needing to change the wheel and couldn't find the locking wheel nut. Now i just keep it in the car at all times. No point having a spare wheel if you have not got the tools to change it. lol.
