hey just a quick question...i bought a couple of bags from asda to add to the stash but its in a transparent bag now the best before is a long life but would leaving it in the bag effect it in anyway over long term storage.
for a much longer shelf life , seal it in a mylar bag with a o2 absorber and then freeze it for a week , after that just put it with the rest of your preps . thats how i was told to store mine .

Pick up 2-3 extra bags of rice and pasta each week and then seal them in a Mylar bag with oxy absorbers when you can fill one of the 20l buckets. Stack em in the garage out of direct sunlight and they'll last for over 10 years.
As others have said Mylar’s definitely the way to go, not only does the original packaging let in light but it also contains a fair bit of air. The plastics they use are also increasingly being designed to be bio-degradable, so a couple of years down the line may well disintegrate.

Yes, that's exactly what you do, and it works for all dried foodstuffs (I think!).
I don't do it like that. I leave the contents in their original packaging and just put a few small pinpricks into the packet. Then I pop the packets into the mylar with the oxy absorbers. Easier, quicker and less potential for any mess!
