our daily bread !

Post by barnsleyprep »

Hi guys

i have been fancying making bread for a while now (well not me actually making it but the wife) but not the conventional way. i have a multi fuel stove so have been thinking of ways to make it possible
would love to hear what you think or am i insane? (the wife thinks so)

so here goes - if i make a tin box oven with a shelf in that will clip to the side of the multifuel stove with a thermometer on and design some flaps top and bottom that can be opened or shut as required to set desired temp could i acheive my goal to cook bread with no elec or gas?

cheers in advance.

On the face of it, it's perfectly doable. Making bread is dead easy, baking equally so. All you need is an oven and what you have described seems to fit.

Just one question though, will you get the required temperature from the outside of your stove?

An hot oven is needed for risen bread but you can make flat breads in a skillet over a fire. No idea if a steel box over a heat source would do a good job, dutch oven work okay but their thick cast iron.

You can bake bread over a stove but it isn't easy. The temp at the top and bottom need to be about the same, this is the tricky part. A steel box over the stove and raising the loaf tin up off the bottom of the box will help. Another problem is that you might need to bake for 25 mins or so (depending on size of loaf) which uses quite alot of fuel. Baking in a dutch oven seems to be a better bet than over a typical camp stove, I'd suggest checking this out. I did find a good pdf with details on how to do all this, but without permission I wont post it, try googling 'baking bread with campfire' or something similar.

we make great chocolate bread and pizzas over the open fire just use 2 cup flour 1 cup milk powder half cup water, it works really well and with only 3 ingrediants is a great standby, just cook gently over fire turning if bread or just leave for a pizza! Yum

JamesWhite! If you can tell me what I can use to replace milk powder in that recipe, you may be my new best friend, that sounds fantastic!
