I have just joined and have a query. I have been watching the Nat Geo series on Preppers. In my own way I have been doing this for ages but on one programe a family in Central America in an earthquake zone have been storing cooked food in GLASS JARS, AND NONE OF THE EXPERTS HAVE PICKED UP ON THIS. One major earthquake and this family will, in my opinion have very little of their jars of food left to eat. At the moment I am storing both dried and canned food, which is always ready to eat. I am in my mid sixties so if anything major were to happen then I would not expect to live very long but at least I will have at least a fair amount to eat. Before very long I intend to buy 5lt storage contained for tap water which I think I can store for approx 6 months. I own a hunting dog but I am sure she would eat what she caught but I live in hope.

I would appreciate any advice and comments.

Good point about glass jars in an earthquake zone, good grief. From what I've heard, the "experts" really don't stop to think about the practicalities of living.

I know what you mean about not expecting to live terribly long after TSHTF - I'm in my late 50s myself, and I just don't have the strength or the stamina that I used to. But I like living, and I plan to do it as long as I can! Including learning to shoot, by the way - I met the Chairperson of our local shooting group at the Diamond Jubilee pageant, and it was a woman our age with arthritis - I felt very reassured!

I think age is a matter of mind in many cases, think young and be positive! I am in that same bracket! and still swim daily, occasional surfing and jogging and insh'allah as they say, hope to be around long after the WTSHTF..lol

Just one tip on the water, if you are storing water for some time, ensure the container is not sitting on any concrete floor, if it is stand it on some wood cross pieces, concrete and plastic over time do not react well...also longer than 6 months place a few drops of 'clear' bleach (pure white bleach NOT with any colouring or 'flavours' in) per 5 litres this will ensure a longer-lasting water efficacy...
