I made my first bottle of sloe gin last night. I know, I know, I did it too early. It's my first attempt so I'm oober keen. So, how and when do I separate the pips to make hunters chocolate?jameswhite wrote:when youve drunk the gin dont throw berries away add them to melted chocolate and refregerate to make "hunters chocolate"

How do you know which mushrooms are edible?jansman wrote:I always like this time of year, mushrooms! I shall take the dog out later and have a scout round. Gotca few Parasols the other day.
Re: Wild, edible foods?
Well, I suppose it is experience. My Dad taught me. I tend only to about 5 types- parasols, wood blewitts(my favourite) field blewitts( bluelegs we call them round here) puffballs, horse mushrooms and often some chicken of the woods. There are others I will pick when I see them, but it is more the case of what I know I pick. In my twenties I knocked about with a Bulgarian lad who was also into hunting. What he and his family did not know about fungi was not worth knowing. Central and Eastern Europeans know their stuff!
Roger Phillips does a good book- you NEED photos where fungi are concerned. Some colleges do mycology course and I know some branches of the WEA do.
