Hand Cranked Torches

Post by NorthernWoody »

Whilst scouting about in IKEA today for my new store room shelving - which I now have and I think I mentioned I have about a million times now! - I happened to see they are doing these torches for £3.50 each. 20-25 revolutions will give you about a minute to a minute and a half of light from the torch, which is actually quite bright.

I know it will probably be rubbish in the long run but I though pretty good for a standby.

What would you say was the best wind up torch/lantern? there's so many cheapies on the market, it makes it hard to choose the right one.

I keep a £3 squeezy torch (eBay) as a back up in my EDC. Had it a couple of years now, and it's good to know it won't run out. Even if I only use it to find my main torch, it's handy.

The Trevor Bailis one is the best one i have had. it gives me 30 min of light on a full winding (which takes a long time, 90 + seconds!) and it doubles up as a phone power pack boost when the battery is low.

I've just found in the clearance section in Tesco a small wind up torch. Lasts 20 minutes with a 1 minute "charge".

Fits really comfortably in your pocket, and at £3 it's not too badly priced.

That's why you need more then one and why you need to plan to use your portable wind up torches to help you get to your olive oil lamp making equipment so that you can get a flame going to see by without needing to perpetually use the windups all the time.
