New Member In Cumbria

Hola all.

Bit of an odd one in the sense I am a returning member in some ways. I used to have an ID on here but it seems to have been eaten by the internet gnomes. I first registered when I was living in Yorkshire and had only recently started out as a 'prepper' for want of a better term. My plan then was to move to the location I hoped would be my 'retreat', to quote J Wesley... Since then I have been lucky enough to do so. I now live in Central Cumbria (I wont be too specific, we all have a need for opsec...). I think I have managed to tick quite a few of the needed boxes for what a retreat should have. I live in an old, converted barn, on a road which is not well travelled, by trees, and with an acre of garden that contains a number of different fruit trees and various medicinal herbs. In addition, it doesn't LOOK like a garden. The house itself is fairly nondescript, and some distance away from the nearest neighbours (perhaps 1000 metres?). Near the house are large areas of forested land, of differing types and levels of growth. I have access to water, with a fairly substantial series of streams near my property, including one going past my garden. I live in a small community, where farming is the most common profession. In fact my land is bordered on three sides by farmland.

Having been lucky enough (and I still cant believe how lucky I am in firstly being able to find this place, and then being able to move so quickly) to move here, I am now in the process of ensuring that I have on hand a wide-ranging and substantial store of both food and supplies for many of the possible eventualities which I'm sure many of you are aware are very possible in the near future. In addition, one of my further steps is to see who may be near enough to perhaps communicate regarding 'preparation' itself.

Enough for now anyway. I hope to post more regarding how well it all goes...

Welcome back.

What a great introduction and you are truly waking the walk.
It sounds great where you are, you must feel very lucky.

How long into your 'dream/plan' were you able to achieve this?

Oh I think just about over a year now. Its been quite hard, but the perfect place just sort of appeared! That said, living out here isn't easy, but then that in itself is great preparation for any further problems. Things you took for granted in cities, such as easy light, heat etc, you have to work at. We'll see how it goes anyway...

Really envious of the progress you've made. Good idea to keep your location anonymous, otherwise we'd all be beating a path to your door. Do you still need to earn cash to pay the bills? If so has that been a problem? Every time we bring up the subject of moving somewhere like you've got my teenage daughter kicks up a real stink. You're really lucky.

I still work. I wont tell you my field but I work two days a week. The wife works full time, and between us it pays the bills. A little less than what I am used to but 'doable'.
