Were pretty lucky in Plymouth to have the choice of nearly all the major supermarkets, I do two car runs a week, one to Aldi and Lidls ( about a mile and a bit there and back) and an Asda and Tesco extra run (15-16 miles round trip) plus city centre trips as needed which are like the local Spar type trip for the rest of the world on foot to the furthest (Mall) end of town can be done in 45 minutes, so I get Asda tinned stuff too amongst other things, not a great lot from Tesco to be honest, but that's because I don't want them to take over the world like you Aldi and Lidl are very useful, and in the town we have Sainsburys Tesco metro, Wilkinsons, Poundland, 2 different shops and one second hand chain which sell airguns and archery stuff, Superdrug, Boots, Savers, Argos, Cotswold, Blacks, Field and Trek, all of some use only down side no firearms shop which may explain my lack of (untill you lot inspired me to look harder) knowledge and experience in that area

After that Ebay and Amazon in fact generally online shopping is a major source of produce and stuff.

I have tried the Aldi and Lidl shops and found there is little difference in price to main supermarket own brands. I don't bother with them now and just shop for own brands at the main supermarkets.

You are lucky, up my way there is a huge difference between Aldi/Lidl, and the main supermarkets, OR Aldi/Lidl charge more down your way?

Not sure lowlander. For example canned potatoes are 19 p all over. I am talking about the own brand canned stuff, beans carrots etc. I bought some tooth paste out of Morrisons last week for 25p, haven't had the bottle to use it yet

Ethnic shops - chinese/kurdy/indian/pakistan etc Do bulk spices loose and chilli/ginger at a fraction on of the cost mainstream supermarkets.

Thinking of building a de hydrator box lightbulb fan have a go at preserving food stuffs...

Salt 5k at £5.98
Plum tomatoes 24 cans £6.98 got 48 cans of these
Red kidney beans 15 cans £7.98
Sugar 25k £20.99
Pg tips tea bags 1150 of £ 15.00
Return trip after Christmas for lentils as there great for soups

Yes, the thread doesn't make an awful lot of sense. Was going to say the same thing about Ivybridge .

I've tried different places for low cost supplies and found Lidl and Aldi are quite expensive (Maybe it's just the type of food I'm buying???) I find Tesco and ASDA are very good, especially there 'value' brand. It's not too shabby either, good quality food which you wouldn't grumble or get bored of in a survival situation. They also have really cheap medicine too. My local Tesco have a 'World Food' isle which is FULL of foreign foods at VERY low prices, it's just hard to make out what half of it is but some of it is very tasty

I also shop in Costco/Makro (When I have money, I am a poor student after all) I buy in bulk when I can, mainly crates of water or beef jerky.

Does anyone else buy value brands? If so what do you buy and what would you rate it out of 10? I'm curious, I'd like to buy different meals etc. but I'm not very experimental! I stick to what I know
