Exercise
Re: Exercise
Went to pick up the keys for my new place today and, since there was no bus, hiked six miles to the new shop. Gorgeous day for a walk here, although I (read hip) can feel the temp dropping. I even found some gorse in flower! It would have been eight miles, but a neighbour spotted me and gave me a lift
Re: Exercise
I saw a programme on tv showing that all that is needed to keep fit and healthy was to do some cardio training (bike, running, cross trainer, rowing machine etc.) for four minutes a day at maximum speed. It is done by doing 30 seconds at full speed then 30 seconds rest 30 and so on x 4. This engages both fast and slow twitch muscles. The science is that we are built for hunter gathering and you would'nt waste energy chasing prey for miles. It also gives the metabolism a boost and you lose more weight as a result. when jogging you are only using slow twitch muscles and not working them to their full capacity. The best comparison is between Bradley Wiggins and Cris Hoy, Wiggins is skinny with small muscles and built for endurance whereas Hoy has huge leg muscles and upper body and is built for power and speed. I know which one I'd rather fight!.
Also exercises like squat thrusts are very good as they use all your muscle groups plus you can incorporate a press up each time. I have read that squat thrusts are the best exercise anybody can do.
Because of health problems I cannot always do these exercises but find pilates and yoga very helpfull for stretching, mobility, balance and core strengthening, also I use some light weights a punch bag an exercise ball and do some chin ups on my pergola (good for upper body strength and abdominals).
Theres no need to spend money on gym membership unless you enjoy going.

I wouldn't like to try to catch either of them on my bike though!hazzy wrote:...............Wiggins is skinny with small muscles and built for endurance whereas Hoy has huge leg muscles and upper body and is built for power and speed. I know which one I'd rather fight!.

Why are Dad Jokes always truly dire?
Went for a stroll down to the beach and back before dinner this evening. Cold, clear but absolutely beautiful out there. I do love the gloaming. I found some Goose Barnacles on the shore. Edible, but I left em where they are for now, since we're not short on the food front, so we don't need em.
(I was going to put up the pic I took, but I can't get the silly thing to work!)

Re: Exercise
Never been a runner not that fit really have always been big i was 7stone at 7 years old I and my family will stay at home as long as we can and defend it easyer to trap up a house than a tent in a field, anyway bricks and morter give added protection plus there is only so much rabbit you can eat before you die lol.I look at the house and think shelter store protect and fight for whats yours I would not think twice about killing someone trying to harm my family if SHTF.
Remeber you don't have to be fit to fight you just need a sharp mind

Re: Exercise
I don't do running. Seriously. Even at school, I was the one who flatly refused to do cross country; no amount of threats made any difference.
I do walking though. It's a good form of exercise, and I do enjoy it, especially now I've taught the hell hound that I walk not to lead weave and pull!

Re: Exercise
Used to be a gym rat purely because I liked exercising and keeping fit - but since bad back - had to stop for a few years - but I am increasingly aware that I have got to get some exercise done even if its swimming to get fitter as part of my prep.
I don't have a vehicle and would hope that if TSHTF would be able to get a train or something out of the City if bugging in is not an option and I have to leave as a last resort - but in reality some of us may have to walk to a safe place and rightly pointed out would also require us to carry our preps, so yes see exercise is part of my prep this year
