Traditional egg preservation was done with "water glass" aka sodium silicate

This was meant to give storage life measured in months

There is an old boy near me that uses this method, he swears by it he said he has stored eggs in it for 8 months and they are still good, the only thing is you can't boil them.

I can't guarantee this but I have been told if you use a needle to punch a hole in the egg you can boil them. The silicate seals the egg and any steam inside cannot escape so the egg explodes. Make a hole and you are meant to be OK.
