multifuel stove for a BOB

Post by tommy1996 »

i was thinking of getting a Primus omnifuel stove for my BOB, what are peoples thoughts on these for a BOB or do you think i would be better off with something more basic, as this will rely on there being fuel around etc.
cheers

Basic is good

Depends what you are using it for, where you using it and many other issues.

No good having a wood burning stove where there are no woods for example ;)

be used for cooking food boiling water etc, would have to be a major disaster for no wood to be around but see your point

If for a BOB then go for a gas adapted trangia, Not too cheap, but plenty of good reports.

Have a look at the Honey Stove.
Packs flat, compact. Burns wood, can take a trangia burner, either meths or the gas conversion. That's what I call multi fuel !!!
It's such a simple thing but it is so versatile. I find it much more convenient to carry that than a full size trangia ( I love Trangias ) because it will take any size pan or cup. I've got a Tatonka mug that slips over the bottom of a 32 oz Nalgene bottle, so my simple cooking kit takes up very little room.
I bought my Honey from Backpacking Light. No affiliation etc just a very happy customer, They're really nice people to deal with and they used to send out free sweets with an order :P (don't know if they still do)

Them's my thoughts
All the best

I've had an MSR Expedition multi fuel cooker for about 15 years+ Basically if you can find a liquid which has a flash point then you can cook with it. I've used Petrol, Diesel, Avtur (jet fuel), isoprope alchohol, spirits, meths you name it. Just change the jet and off you go, if I had to replace it I would go for the same again

Second that, if it's liquid and burns then an MSR will burn it. it really is a good little stove

You get two jets with it, a small one for 'thin' fuels like pertol and a larger one for 'thick' fuels such as diesel. If you are unsure which one to use for a particular fuel you just try one, if it doesn't work properly change to the other - simples!
