Would've thought your first port of call would be to get a pir floodlight in your back garden as you said no light out there.

(sorry if it's been mentioned already, there's a lot of posts to read though).

As mentioned, Berberis is the one. Lots of rare breed butterflies like this stuff too!

Smoothing a wall off is quite effective. Use a mortar mix to dome up the top and inlay some smooth pebbles. This makes it more difficult for fingers to get a purchase.

Is there anything on the other sides of these walls/fences that they are getting a 'leg-up' from? Wheelie bins and recycle boxes make great step ladders!

Cameras are cheap nowadays, searching eBay will bring up a few options that run off of SD cards and can be sat in your windowsill.

The main things is to not panic and keep vigilant. The average person you'll find hopping over walls is a chancer with little experience and looking for a smash and grab at some tools in your shed. Picking locks and breaking into houses is a different ball game all together.

As far as storage is concerned, I have a ladder installed with the centre of the loft all boarded out, plastic containers with provisions are all neat and tidy.

The boarding helps spread load, and most weight is near the wall.
