A year or so ago I noticed a Katadyn Pocket on amazon for £80 - these usually retail around £200 so I frantically started to look at reviews!
Some of the basics - 0.2 micron ceramic filter (this can be cleaned), the filter is designed to last around 50000 liters which is far above and beyond most other filters.
So I went for it and a few days later I was the proud new owner of the filter!
First impressions - Heavy! For long trips or car emergency its grand, for a quick hike its a fair weight. Very solidly built, metal pump and plastic body, has had a few knocks so far and has stood up well.
Use - The inlet pipe is basic to say the least, around 1 meter long with a plastic surrounded mesh filter on the end, an issue I found was this floats on the surface of the water rather than sinking down to avoid surface scum, a small fishing weight rectified this!
It is fairly tough to pump but once the water starts flowing it comes out a fair pace.
The outlet pipe is about 30cm long comes with a labeled bag to avoid contamination.
Also included is a bottle of seal lube and two scrubbing pads.
Used it for a wee trek up the mournes and took a chance to use it in a fast flowing stream without any other filtration system, the water had no other taste and had a nice clean look.
On getting home the filter was stripped and checked, Katadyn recommend a small amount of bleach with water pumped through then flushed and left to dry, all comes apart easily and goes back together much the same!
All in all a very handy filter, for the usual price I would say a bit steep but if you see it reduced go for it!
Will post pictures if people are interested and review my primus omnifuel later!
