Moving abroad

Post by Toddie »

Alright so for the past 3-4 months we've been giving the house a makeover ready to move to the Canary Island (Lanzarote to be precise) and since this decision has been made it's had me thinking about my preps.

I'll keep a long story short. We're moving there for a year initially, renting the house we own out (in England) to pay for the rent in Lanzarote then if we settle well we'll stay. If not we'll come home.

Now obviously there's only so many things i can take, i've started eating into my preps (food wise) as they're obviously not coming with.

But my dilemma is this: Do i rent storage space to keep the rest of my gear, or do i sell? Or maybe geocache?

The only things i'm going to be able to take will have to fit in a 40L daypack.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else has ever been in this situation. As this has been bothering me for a while but have decided today is the day to ask you guys.

do you plan on taking your house contents with you .

i looked at australia a while back , you can ship and i do mean ship by boat your entire house contents in a container . would that be an option for you . at least that way you can take just about everything with you .
YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .

Unless you have any antiques or cherish a particular piece , sell the lot here and buy overthere, the costs involve just dont add up .

Furniture etc is probably best bought for the local climate/taste unless as popiesdad said particular items have financial/sentimental value. This might seem strange but do you want to be starting a new life in Lansagrotty but bring your 'Little England' memories with you?

I'd be inclined (if you can) to store 'stuff' in the UK, leaving it in your house(attic) or with family / friends if possible. You'd feel daft, if you didn't 'get on' with The Canaries and you came back to UK only to have to re-buy stuff that you own now!
Obviously chuck out the rubbish now# I'd be inclined to do an inventory of 'stuff' and stick a colour coded sticker (could be a mental note) on everything you intend to leave. Green for essential to keep, yellow for maybe, red for probably chuck. After (say) a year if visiting you could dump/sell the red stuff - after all if you haven't 'missed' something after a year then you probably won't miss it again? I'd then re-appraise everything left and repeat the exercise.

# I don't practice what I preach - in the past I've moved house couple of times bringing broken Hoovers that I MIGHT NEED FOR SPARES! :D
