Riot control agents and respirators.

Post by Pestweazle »

I know there has previously been some discussion about gas masks but it all seems a bit confusing to me. Does anyone have any suggestions for a respirator/filter that is suitable for tear gas and any other nasties we might face in a shtf scenario (diseases, particulates, CRBN). I've had a look at:
www.avon-protection.com but don't really understand the different masks and filters.
I'm guessing full face is best.

The mask, correctly fitted is only the beginning.

Then comes the PPE clothing, detectors, proprophylaxtic medicines, spares of all mentioned and maintainance of said items...

Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

pestweazle, I second the comments made by pseudonym. I'm an instructor in this area for my agency and the question you ask is very broad. Nevertheless, check out this site. Its a NIOSH fact sheet put out by the CDC for respirators. Clearly its for Ameican public consumption, but so far as I know many of the facts you find here are applicable to the EU and probably the UK (someone else will have to advise on that point - but I wouldn't suprised if the UK government has a similar website). Anyway hope it answers some questions.

British army issue S10 respirator should cover most of the N B C stuff , they used cs gas in the gas chamber as part of you yearly qualifications , sizing is pretty straight forward as it has to be squaddy proof .

Ain't that difficult

Hello Poppypiesdad... respectfully I must disagree with your assessment that because a "squaddy" can do it mustn't be that difficult. Frankly that's a little bit of an insult to "squaddies" everywhere. But lets move forward on the premise that a "squaddy" is a low IQ bumpkin. The reason its not difficult for them is because all the difficult questions have been answered for the by their officers, NCOs, or specialists. Questions like:

Is the respirator properly fitted? How do we know? Was a qualitative or quantitative test used?

Is the respirator in good working order? How do you know? How do you fix it? How do you maintain it?

Is the cartridge appropriate for the agent? How do you know? Has it been used before? When should it be changed? Is it expired? How do you tell?

When do you don your gear when do you doff it? How do you know? Is additional PPE required? What PPE is required?

When where and how do you contaminate? Etc...

CS is one thing. But Sarin or VX is something else. I think its a bit irresponsible leave folks with the impression that just because they buy a piece of kit and they think they know how to use it means they really do and are safe when they use it. You have to do a some research and get some training.

Its important to remember, I think, that a little knowledge is sometimes a dangerous thing. After all you wouldn't give someone a firearm and a few cartridges, show them how to load and unload it then consider them "combat ready" would you?

Thanks for letting me throw in my two cents...

Thanks for all the replies, really appreciate it.

Judicatr I have read the link and that answers a lot of my questions.

If I had to choose one agent to avoid it would probably be CS. I envisage civil unrest as one of the most likely events to prep for (caused by whatever) I will have a look at the S10. Is there a specific cartridge to get with it?

Does anyone think getting one is a waste of time/money?

Hopefully the following link is permitted, but here's a supplier of masks but also give a little detail about what each one if effective against. Gas masks can seem daunting but learn as much as you can including maintenance as if not use correctly it's not worth using. msg if interested and can send over some more info and links.
