Our son has a lifelong medical condition which although not life threatening in everyday life, could become so if his supplies weren't available (not meds, just equipment/appliances etc)
Just wondered how other safeguard their medically vulnerable......
Have begun a stash of supplies in the loft by over ordering slightly each time I order (all stuff is mail order. Docs just authorise request from medical company). Get a bit spooked when I think 'what if'....
Prepping for serious medical conditions
Re: Prepping for serious medical conditions
Indeed meds are a big issue, but for the most part our prepping is not that long term, let's face it space is the limiting factor for most of us, but if you can somehow wangle enough meds for months on end good for you
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.
Re: Prepping for serious medical conditions
Not surprised you're feeling spooked, Jasper - have you done any research about herbal substitutes? Or how you'd make any of that equipment? Or even service the equipment you already have? If its disposable, what about a high powered version where you can clean it and put it back into service, like a really expensive water filter?
Sorry if this is all off the mark - its a bit hard to know what feedback to give you without knowing, but of course you want to respect your son's privacy as much as poss.
Hope this helps.

Re: Prepping for serious medical conditions
Difficult to answer without knowing condition. will have to assume no meds needed as the problem with them is dosage ie suringe drivers and hebal replacements give unknown dosage.
hoists normally have hand back up so no prob, peg feed can be done with suringe, disposable instruments can be backed up with autoclavable, disposable dressings/sanatary products can be replaced with washable ie teraline for incontinence.
i would sujest looking up where the distribution centres are for the products you use and what re usable alternatives there are.
for clinical waste disposal a blast furnace incinerator could be biult with bricks and sand.
sorry cant help more so kept it general.

Re: Prepping for serious medical conditions
I could probably give you some good advice as my background is health care but I am unaware of the condition.
Re: Prepping for serious medical conditions
Thanxs for all the replies, and I apologise for being a bit vague.....as you say, I tried not to be too specific. Its mainly continence, organ health and skin issues.
Great tip about finding the distributor bases for the supplies......
Will be looking into an into to herbalism for some alternatives to some of his lotions and potions.
Some of it we COULD re-use if we HAD to, to a point, but infection control is a big issue. Homemade incinerator is a way to go too.....cheers
Think the best way to go is to "prepperise" his supplies in the same way I do our food storage......"store what we use, and use what we store"......luckily we have a big loft, and his stuff doesn't weigh the earth, and there is no set amount to be used in a set time, so our re-orders don't follow a set path.
Cheers guys.....helped a lot

Re: Prepping for serious medical conditions
Just a thought, but for some conditions you could try and find out what gets done in rural parts of the developing world or places with limited supplies? I imagine doctors in isolated hospitals in poor areas have come up with a fair few ingenious, low-tech or reusable options for things the NHS spends thousands on.
I managed to get myself off all but pain medication earlier this year but as I'm prepping for a friend of mine who is reliant on thyroxine I'm currently researching how to acquire and dose it from animals, she's also started stockpiling by getting meds slightly more frequently than necessary and using the oldest from stocks first.

Re: Prepping for serious medical conditions
My wife and I both need thyroxine on a daily basis, we have at least ten months saved up which I rotate regularly, but if everything went wrong I'm not sure where we would get the medication we need.
I would be interested to see your results.24942895 wrote:I managed to get myself off all but pain medication earlier this year but as I'm prepping for a friend of mine who is reliant on thyroxine I'm currently researching how to acquire and dose it from animals, she's also started stockpiling by getting meds slightly more frequently than necessary and using the oldest from stocks first.

I'm not sure how long it's going to take me to gather that info, so busy these days, but I'll post it here as I'm sure it'll be potentially vital for others too.Oldarborman wrote:My wife and I both need thyroxine on a daily basis, we have at least ten months saved up which I rotate regularly, but if everything went wrong I'm not sure where we would get the medication we need.I would be interested to see your results.24942895 wrote:I managed to get myself off all but pain medication earlier this year but as I'm prepping for a friend of mine who is reliant on thyroxine I'm currently researching how to acquire and dose it from animals, she's also started stockpiling by getting meds slightly more frequently than necessary and using the oldest from stocks first.
