I fought a losing battle against the slugs last year as well, tried copper and slug pellets but the buggers just ignored it all. This year I am going to try "Nematodes" as they were recommended to me by someone who had great success with them.

I sprinkled pellets last year and the year before. In the mornings the ground was strewn with hundreds of slugs and snails. I think I've broken the cycle but the whole area is cursed with them and they'll just repopulate from around about.

I'll nail some copper strip to the top of the sleepers if I can still afford copper at the time ;)

On way to extend the growing season if you have the materials to build a cold frame is to instead use a Victorian idea and build hot frames. They are cold frames on top of a compost heap. The compost generates heat as it brakes down and stops the frost getting to the plants. :geek:

Well that's me just finished off the last of the Brussel sprouts, in caramelised onion and sprout soup, one of my all time favourites. so the Brussels patch needs double dug and left open so the frost can kill a few of the bugs for me, that patch is going to be Kale in a few weeks, I'm a fan of kale cooked like spinach it's great but picked as young leafs. great for a salad. last right through next winter with luck. As for planting nothing this month grounds too wet and cold, mushrooms in the shed are still producing but as for greens it's only bean sprouts.
This weekend will be digging up and splitting up some rhubarb, need to get some ready for early forcing the rest will be moved to a new "hot" bed for maximum yield this summer.
Hope the snow stays up in the hills!

The snow's down here with me  I woke up at half 7 to the noise of massed snow shovels - the neighbours out clearing the street to let the girl next door get to work. It had frozen hard overnight. Some has melted now but it's still white. Ground like concrete.
I grew some kale. It was the most disgusting thing I ever tasted but its indestructible  I shove it in soup so I dont have to taste it. Good for vit C in winter I suppose. My granny called her back garden the "kale yard" and I always wanted to know what kale was. I sort of wish I still didnt .

I'm in 2 minds whether to put too much work into the veg patch this year as hopefully we will be moving to the east coast later in the year. I might just try growing small qtys of things that i havent tried before just to see how they do.

On the plus side I planted all my fruit bushes I bought last year into large pots (builders buckets  ) so hopefully they will be coming with us

I haven't got fruit - I hate it and the OH is diabetic and can't eat it. You can do all your salady stuff though, save some money for the move ..

Apart from Spuds, Swede, and Sprouts I dont really like veg either....I have to force myself to eat it :D. Apart from it being a useful skill to learn I only started growing veg thinking that I would eat more if I grew it myself, which has worked to a degree.
