The cream is my own receipe - essential oils, with an aloe base. Kids refer to it as ''Mums Magic Cream'' as it'll fix just about anything bar bruises - we have arnica for those :)

(Not many people know, but if you have managed to bruise yourself severely, you can significantly lessen the swelling and colour by applying leeches immediately.)

Prevention is certainly better than cure, in a wilderness setting the danger of infected wounds and insect bites are one of the biggest dangers.
So proper protection when working with blades and insect repellent are a must.

Some infections can be treated symptomatically a patient with a fever should be well hydrated and drugs such as paracetamol will lower a fever.
Then its up to the immune system to do the rest.

This was due to a botched replacement filling from when I chipped the tooth as a child, which led to me having to have root canal treatment, and the ineptitude of a succession of dentists (I have been a dental victim for most of my life, it would seem, since I found out that my childhood dentist was struck off for malpractice and I have had further problems with other dentists since). I have an infection in the root/bone of one tooth, which I thought had been successfully treated years ago. Because of some botched root canal, my current dentist had to do a small operation to scrape out the bone and fill it with bone substitute (this was done privately and was experimental - it doesn't seem to have worked, I've only just realised since developing a little bubble in my gum (a bit like a mouth ulcer) which is where the infection is breaking through - I've only recently heard that another dentist is being investigated for performing similar operations). Because it doesn't really hurt, I wasn't aware of it before. I am now on my second lot of antibiotics and I can still see no change, but the likelihood is I'll need an implant to sort it out for good. I'm wondering if I should be expected to pay for that too (I'm a wee bit mad, can you tell :)?) Getting to the point, I am assured that, even with the antibiotics, the problem isn't solved. Antibiotics can't do everything and abscesses can be fatal. Unfortunately, and without giving too much information away, my dentist (who is normally very good) is not currently available, the locum doesn't want to get involved (not stated, but I can just tell) and pre-SHTF times, I am currently "considering my position".
Current update: I tried to chase up my dental surgery and, long story short, my dentist and his wife have shut up shop! He was off with stress (long story), but they are still registered at their home address. That's about as much as I can find out. So I found a new dentist, who seems very good and I've now had my 4th lot of antibiotics with little improvement and am so glad for paracetamol, but found out it was hot food and drink that was setting the pain off, so having to following hot meals and drinks with cold water. Going back for some work at dentist in a few days and have a referral to get the difficult tooth sorted - another op and the hope that an implant won't be needed. Annoyingly, I had pointed out an area of concern to my previous dentist and was dismayed, having paid for a white filling, to discover it was still visible. I didn't push it because the dentist had other problems (long story). Now find the x-ray shows the nerve may be affected having been left too long - he gave me what appeared to be a surface filling on the inside, leaving the beginning of decay between two very tightly together teeth - this may actually be where the pain is coming from and I may need root canal. Our family has good dental health, I think - we spend a lot of time, effort and money to make sure they stay that way, but we don't seem to be able to rely on the professionals to help us. Sorry to bang on, but the point of this is to say, do make sure your dentist is doing everything they can to ensure your oral health is at its best should the SHTF.

I really hope that this time it will be sorted for you, nothing more miserable than tooth ache that goes on and on. I have a fantastic dentist but have also had some horrors over the years too, he was going to go private and I would have gone with him still as hes that good. Good luck and may you be pain free very soon!

Sounds horrific, all well now? Or ongoing?
