Khukris for Bushcraft

Truth be told,im a Khukri fanatic. Been a collector for years. Just think they are a great all rounder,multipurpose tool.As stated,they are a meld between knife/axe/machete/anti burglar device Has to be an authentic Nepalese one mind,they make some amazing tools and look after it,they will last u many lifetimes.

What's the purpose of the notch at the handle? I see it on quite a lot of different styles of khukri so it must be for something

its called a kaudi. there are many theories and stories to what the notch is exactly for,like its to stop the blood running on to your hand,its to catch your opponents knife etc but in truth,the actual reason has been forgotten,even by the Nepalese. it most likely is a religious symbol,some say its in the shape of a cows hoof and a representation of shiva.

I believe that at least part of the reason it because thats what makes it a kukri rather then a bent knife

It does act like a 'Spanish Notch' letting water, sap and 'other fluids' drip off rather then running onto the handle, it also gives you a good start-point when sharpening...... I can't vouch for the blade-catching thing as I've made it a point to avoid knife-fights

I've carried a Khukri for years, always had one on my webbing for all the years I served in the army, I had a genuine Gurkha one passed on to me from a guy in my squadron who was leaving the army, that was 1984 and I've only just replaced it with another genuine one hand made in Nepal.

In my oppinion there's nothing better to carry, it will carry out the job of a dozen other knives and tools and litterally last a lifetime if you look after it
