We were told (long time back) that you used it pale purple to treat drinking water, deep pruple (no not the band!) for antifungal or antibacterial and mix it with brake fluid (glycine) and you get a supprisingly vigorous fire starter. It's actually used in some places for burning brush back (they fill table tennis balls, inject them with glycine and throw them into the bushes... very quickly)
It was also claimed to work as a shark repellant... but having seen a test of "proper" shark repellant which didn't repel the sharks I have serious doubts about potassium permanganate working.

Did they use it on impetigo in the 70'/80's? because I have a memory of having it and having to put purple ointment on it? that would have been 1980/81?

Going somewhat off topic but regarding shark repellent.

Regarding anti fungals I'm told that dichromate has a very similar action, but I've never used it.

For EDC, I bought some 1ml and 2ml perfume sample bottles to use as watertight containers for keeping PP dry.
