he he
if your going ahead personally id recommend a pair of crimping pliers for the lugs like these
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-PL55 ... B000LFTKNW
gives a nice tight connection (if you know a electrician or mechanic chances are they will lend you them)
the cable for the inverter in the 300w case is 12awg which in metric English is 2.05mm2
if you want any more pictures or details let me know

Out of curiosity have you considered connecting up a suitably sized Solar panel to keep the battery fully charged in a prolonged off grid situation?

Re: Budget backup / 12vdc and 240vac power supply
few pics one or 2 bits need sorting properly but this is how it stands now....

top of box
mains socket detail (need 3 core flex the current bit of flex is 2 core but for safetys sake i added some earth singles i had knocking about)
bottom you can just see the back of the inverter and the back of the main battery isolator switch one wire to the inverter and the other to the live fuse holder 40a fuse to go in there when i get them
the white cable from the inverter to the yellow bit is the led and led power supply showing me the inverter is turned on or off

bit out of focus but this shows the negative battery clamp and wiring one negative to the cig socket on the box top the other to the inverter...

showing live wires to cig lighter socket and inverter and battery in place fuses are currently 20A for the socket and 30a for the inverter (soon to be 40a when i get some)
inverter plugged into external socket on the box

so my to do list
replace mains flex with 3 core
buy 2 fuse holders

oh and repair led as one of the wires fell off tonight

Well it shoves out 4 amps or so on a bright day..
It all depends on how much its been discharged working on the 50% dod( depth of discharge) 55ah would theoretically take 13 3/4 hours at 4 amps
I've also got a small generator with a 8 a charge output and a 20a mains charger
