Short term plans: Briefcase stove, 2 X ethanol stoves, 1 X hexi stove, plus some small home made tin can pellet stoves.
Long term plans: Set fire to some stuff!
Fire making kit = one sparky roddy flinty thingy, two magnifying glasses and a load of ciggy lighters that have been in my "stock" for quite a while now!

Personally I have quite a bit for different things + 2 of my vehicles run on it as well (duty paid now of course but if SHFT they would run from a bottle). As far as I know there's no limit to the number of bottles you can have for home use, although commercial use/ resale is different and requires jumping through hoops. Certainly on a recent job suppliers were happy to drop off 20 x 47kg bottles into a corner of the site and yes we had to have security to stop them walking away.patrickm35 wrote:Interesting thanks all , do you all keep a big suply of gas ?
As has been said on this thread it is possible with adapters to DIY refill a bottle BUT ITS DANGEROUS, purpose made refillable bottles have an 80% fill cut off device in them (i.e the bottles you can fill at an autogas pump) normal ones do not. If you are going to do this you need to be aware of what you are doing and make sure you DO NOT 100% fill a bottle or bad things will happen.

Initially camping stove/bbq.
Then camp fire-it used to be my daily method of cooking at one time.
I would love to make a cob oven.

We have a briefcase type stove with 2 burners and a small single burner, a few canisters of the gas to go with them.
I have quite a few packets of the Wright's bread mixes stored away, all you need to add is water and something to mix it in. I also have packets of easy bake yeast along with bags of strong bread flour.
REMEMBER TO FREEZE ANY DRY GOODS YOU WILL BE STORING AWAY LONGTERM FOR AT LEAST 72 HOURS TO KILL THE CRITTERS THAT ARE PRESENT IN ALL GRAINS, FLOURS AND DRIED GOODS NO MATTER HOW EXPENSIVE THEY WERE EVEN IF YOU MYLAR BAG STORE THEM OR YOUR FOOD WILL BE OVERRUN WITH INSECTS AND UNUSEABLE.

Do you freeze before or after sealing in mylar? Shouldn't the oxy absorbers kill all the critters? Is freezing a case of belt and braces? Don't get me wrong here - nothing wrong with belt and braces, but I'm curious that there doesn't seem to be a consensus about the details of mylar storage.Decaff wrote:FREEZE ANY DRY GOODS ... I have a campingaz single burner and an ancient single burner gas burner.
My emergency food preps are centered around the use of only two single ring burners.
I had thought about getting another empty propane cylinder to make a wood/charcoal oven which I had totally designed in my head.
While telling my 88 year old dad about my plans for building an oven out of a propane tank he reminded me of our gas oven which is hiding away in the storage compartment of his/our old trailer tent.
I'm gonna finish helping my wife decorate our bedroom then it's into the trailer to find my dad's goodies.
I think there is a gas two ring cooker out there also that has a grill.
I think buying a fair few gas canisters may be in order soon.

How will I be cooking? I'd like to say with the excess heat from the wood gas generator but that drifts into wishful thinking.
In reality short term we have gas , butane and propane , and if desperate we could always make up something like a bengazi cooker. I have stocked a certain amount of charcoal and have a stock of wood too. The wood and probably the charcoal would be the long term solution unless I can rig up that generator or bio digester to produce methane.

Bugged In: do we need to cook...?
==========================
While we still have electric for microwave, freezer (frozen meat) and gas for hob - as normal from normal day to day food supplies - once that has gone and we are into emergency stores cache which is different from my normal food supplies / cooking needs.
So once the power and mains gas has gone:
Bushbox XL + 60kg pre-cut small kindling sticks plus fire steel, Vaseline, steel wool, cotton wool, jet lighters, water proof matches
that said, there wont be much that needs cooking (I don't drink tea or coffee)...
carbs coming from various dried beans, rice and egg noodles, all of which can be soaked and then quickly boiled to heat
protein coming from jerky, canned tuna / salmon, nuts, peanut butter - all of which doesn't need cooking
veg is all tinned so again no cooking
lots of canned soup
it can all be eaten cold, and boiling rice shouldn't generate tempting cooking smells, and cooking will be done (safely) indoors on top floor with windows closed.
have olive oil to boost callories in meals
muesli for breakfast which I can eat dry (I don't like milk)
cured meat chiritzo sausage again doesn't need any cooking
and for those depressed moments lamenting my dislike of beans, there is always chocolate, dried fruit, canned fruit and cocco
Bugged Out: now I have to cook!!!
==========================
If mobile with car then I will have the remain of the above emergency supplies, however, if forced out on foot / bike - food stores will be limited, as I don't yet have a BOL pre-equipped with food cache
Fresh Rabbit, more rabbit, fish maybe even... hopefully will be caught, and that will all be cooked on the Bushbox with locally sourced twigs and stuff

Re: if shit hit the fan how will you be cooking!?
I have a number of portable/camping gas stoves which use a variety of gas cartridges, this is so that I can utilise whatever gas cartridge I can get my hands on once my own stock has depleted. I have a gas BBQ on the patio with a couple of appropriate gas cylinders. I have a charcoal BBQ bucket and a chimera and several bags of charcoal. I have a Tranga meths stove and methylated spirits. I have a Primus No.5 and paraffin. I have a rocket stove (though I have yet to actually practice cooking on this...). I have a couple of Hexi stoves and fuel blocks. And if I get through all that, I have good ol' matches, flint 'n' steel and plenty of experience with lighting fires. My go-to stove for home use would be one of the Bistro style stoves, which I used for all my cooking for about 3 months when I first moved into my house until I bought a proper cooker. I became the master of one-pot cooking!
